OVA
Description
Ryo Asuka originates from the broader Devilman narrative, ultimately revealed as Satan, the fallen angel who rebelled against God millions of years ago over the planned extermination of demonkind. This rebellion triggered a war, defeat, and entombment in ice. Reawakening in the modern era, Satan assumed the identity of Ryo Asuka—the deceased human son of Professor Asuka, killed in a demon-orchestrated car accident. Psycho Jenny suppressed Satan's memories, allowing him to fully believe he was human for a time.

Within *Amon: Apocalypse of Devilman*, a direct continuation of prior OVAs, Ryo initially supports Akira Fudo (Devilman) against demons. A critical shift occurs upon Ryo regaining his memories as Satan. He publicly reveals demon existence via televised broadcast, deliberately omitting the distinction between demons and Devilmen like Akira. This omission incites global mass hysteria and paranoia, directly leading to Miki Makimura and her brother Tare's deaths at the hands of a human mob. Ryo/Satan's actions are partly driven by jealousy over Akira's closeness to Miki.

Following Miki's death, Akira's grief and rage cause him to lose control, allowing the demon Amon to usurp his body. As Amon rampages, Ryo confronts him in his true form: Satan, depicted as a twelve-winged angelic being exhibiting both male and female physical characteristics (described as intersex or hermaphroditic). Despite his love for Akira, Satan's earlier machinations have irrevocably fractured their relationship, culminating in a final battle. The OVA concludes with Akira, having regained control after defeating Amon internally, silently rejecting Satan by walking away without further conflict.

Ryo/Satan's personality displays formality and reserve post-awakening, though underlying emotional conflict is evident. His core motivator remains love for Akira, manifesting possessively and destructively. He exhibits little remorse for the widespread death and suffering his revelations cause, viewing humanity's eradication as necessary for demonkind's supremacy. His angelic form emphasizes ethereal beauty and intersex nature, featuring twelve white wings, nudity, and physical traits blending masculine and feminine elements.

His relationship with Akira is defined by profound tragedy. Initially presenting as Akira's closest friend and ally, his betrayal and role in Miki's death render reconciliation impossible. While Satan desires Akira's companionship in the new world order, Akira's rejection signifies the ultimate personal failure of Satan's plans, leaving him isolated despite victory in the larger war.
