Description
Kenichi Shirahama is a sixteen-year-old high school student who serves as the main protagonist of his story. He is a second-year student at Koryo High School and leads a largely average life, living with his parents and younger sister, Honoka. His childhood included a close friendship with Ryuto Asamiya, as the two were often picked on together. A formative incident occurred when they witnessed a young girl named Miu Furinji defeat a group of thugs. Inspired, the two boys made a promise to become stronger, though Kenichi would later forget this vow. This forgotten promise and a subsequent move by his family would ultimately strain his relationship with Ryuto.
At the beginning of his journey, Kenichi is portrayed as good-natured, timid, polite, and often cowardly, which leads to him being frequently bullied and treated as a friendless loser at school. His gentle and intellectual side is expressed through his love for gardening and reading a wide variety of "how-to" books. He is kind, compassionate, and thoughtful to a fault, adhering to a strict moral code that governs his actions. This includes a firm, self-imposed rule to never hit a woman, no matter the situation, a conviction that often frustrates his female opponents. While he is against violence, his primary motivation for studying martial arts is not to become the strongest fighter, but to gain the strength and courage necessary to protect the people and values most important to him. He seeks just enough power to defend his loved ones without causing unnecessary harm, a philosophy aligned with the "life-saving fist".
Despite his fearful nature, Kenichi demonstrates remarkable bravery when his friends or family are in danger, showing that his cowardice vanishes in the face of true threats to his loved ones. As the story progresses, he grows significantly more confident and courageous, though he retains his essential humility and politeness. He is known for thinking logically, often crushing the grandiose dreams of young delinquents, and possesses a strong sense of empathy, even showing concern for the health of his enemies and trying to befriend former adversaries. His lack of any form of killer intent, or sakki, is noted as a unique trait that causes opponents to underestimate him, as they see no hostility in him. This very purity of spirit often moves his defeated enemies to reconsider their own paths and become his allies. Comedic relief is often derived from his perverted side, which is cultivated by his master Kensei Ma, leading to instances of spying on the female dojo members and purchasing illicit photographs, which contrasts sharply with his otherwise innocent and flustered reactions to accidental nudity.
Kenichi's role in the story is that of a disciple, as he joins the Ryozanpaku dojo after a failed attempt to gain strength in his school's karate club, where he was merely used as a punching bag. At Ryozanpaku, he becomes the collective student of six eccentric and immensely powerful masters, each specializing in a different martial art, including karate, jujutsu, Chinese martial arts, and Muay Thai. He is also an honorary co-founder of the Shinpaku Alliance, a position he is not entirely happy about due to the antics of the actual founder, Haruo Niijima. His key relationship is with Miu Furinji, the granddaughter of the dojo's elder. He has a deep crush on her, which is a recurring source of humor and motivation. While their relationship remains unclear for much of the series, it slowly develops, and by the conclusion, they are married and have a daughter. Other important relationships include his sister Honoka, whom he is fiercely protective of, and a growing circle of friends, most of whom were originally his enemies. He also unknowingly attracts the affection of several other girls, including Renka Ma and Li Raichi, due to his strength and kind heart.
The development of Kenichi is defined by his incredible work ethic. Although his masters consistently state that he has no natural talent for martial arts, he more than compensates with relentless hard work and an unparalleled capacity to endure his masters' brutal and often life-threatening training regimens. This training, which he initially endures only under coercion, gradually transforms him from the weakest student in school into a fighter capable of defeating opponents with years of experience and borderline superhuman abilities. His masters acknowledge that while he lacks innate talent, he is a genius at hard work. By the end of the series, Kenichi's growth is so substantial that he finally achieves the level of a martial arts master himself.
Kenichi's notable abilities stem from his hybrid and adaptive fighting style. Rather than favoring a single discipline, he interchanges techniques from all the styles he has learned, making his fighting unpredictable and hard for analytical opponents to read. His signature tactic includes the "Ryozanpaku Rhythm," where he mimics the mannerisms and voices of his masters mid-fight to disrupt an enemy's predictions. Despite training in weapons with the master Shigure, he dislikes using them in combat and prefers to fight unarmed. His physical capabilities are the result of his Charles Atlas Superpower-level training, allowing him to perform feats like running through stone walls. He has mastered advanced concepts like the Seikuken, a defensive sphere of awareness, in a remarkably short time, showing his capacity to learn through sheer determination. His ultimate strength lies not in any single technique, but in his immense willpower and his ability to draw upon his deep-seated desire to protect others, which his masters note as the foundation of true strength.
