Description
Emperor Zambojil, the primary antagonist from Boazan, rose from illegitimate birth as the son of the previous emperor and Contessa. Resentful of his exclusion from succession in favor of cousin Baron Hrothgar, he sabotaged Hrothgar's coronation. Zambojil publicly exposed Hrothgar's concealed lack of horns—a trait stigmatized as inferior on Boazan—causing Hrothgar's disgrace, imprisonment, and enslavement, allowing Zambojil to seize the throne.
His reign enforced a rigid caste system: horned Boazanians ruled as nobility while the hornless faced enslavement or execution. Zambojil pursued imperial expansion, conquering planets including Earth, Brahmin, Tau Cetis, and Gliese. Paranoia fueled his actions, especially regarding threats from Hrothgar's lineage. Learning Hrothgar's wife Rozalia died in childbirth, Zambojil took the infant Zardoz. He raised Zardoz to despise his biological father and view humans as inferior, indoctrinating him into Boazanian supremacist ideology before appointing him commander of the Earth invasion force.
Zambojil constantly manipulated Zardoz, outwardly offering military support while secretly dispatching agents like General Oslak, Zuhl, and Marquise Zaki to assassinate him upon failure or defiance. He openly berated Zardoz for setbacks and perceived weakness, reinforcing control through psychological cruelty. When Voltes V and rebels counter-invaded Boazan, Zambojil's regime collapsed amidst revolts by the enslaved hornless population and the desertion of his loyalists. In the original anime, he attempted to flee with stolen riches but was intercepted and killed by Zardoz seeking retribution. The live-action *Voltes V: Legacy* alters his demise: after a physical confrontation with Hrothgar, Zardoz stabbed him and he perished in an explosion.
Portrayal differences exist. The original anime depicts him as overtly cowardly, fleeing without resistance when confronted. *Legacy* introduces his mother Contessa as an active instigator of his usurpation and portrays him with marginally greater combat capability, including sword duels. Both iterations consistently emphasize his racism, ambition, and ruthless oppression.
