Utano Hokke, the youngest of five sisters, lives with her siblings in persistent poverty following their parents' abandonment and death. The sisters sustain themselves through part-time jobs and shared duties.

Driven by youthful curiosity, Utano discovers a jar sealed by their father, explicitly marked with a talisman forbidding opening until age 18. She defies the warning, breaks the seal, and releases Akumako, an imp confined within. Akumako reveals that their parents belonged to an evil organization and commands the sisters to continue this legacy as agents of evil. Utano's act directly sets the primary narrative in motion.

Joining the resulting group, Gedou Otome Tai, Utano and her sisters gain magical abilities tied to elemental forces; Utano specifically wields light-based powers. Despite their efforts to commit evil deeds under Akumako's instruction, their inherent kindness causes them to inadvertently help others, leading people to mistakenly perceive them as heroes.
