Description
Souther, the Holy Emperor, serves as the main antagonist in his story arc. He is the sole successor of Nanto Hōō Ken, bearing the destiny of the Star of Leadership. This grants him authority over the Nanto constellation and rulership over other Nanto successors.
Adopted and trained by the previous master Ōgai, Souther was tricked into killing his mentor during the style's succession ritual. This act inflicted deep trauma, leading Souther to reject all emotions—particularly love and compassion—as incompatible with rule. His emotional suppression gradually eroded his morality.
Establishing a tyrannical regime as Holy Emperor, Souther enslaved children to build his Holy Cross Mausoleum, a monument honoring Ōgai. He ruled with extreme ruthlessness, employing hostages and brutal force for control. His manipulation of the Nanto Rokusei Ken, especially through Yuda, sowed chaos among their ranks.
Souther possesses a rare congenital condition: dextrocardia with situs inversus totalis. This mirrors the placement of his heart and vital organs, reversing his pressure points and initially rendering conventional Hokuto Shinken techniques ineffective. His aggressive fighting style emphasizes dominance over defense, utilizing high-speed slicing techniques that carve Southern Cross-shaped wounds. His signature aerial attack is the Tenshō Jūji Hō, executed while gliding.
In his confrontation with Kenshiro, Souther exploited his reversed physiology to gain advantage. Kenshiro eventually discovered this secret and weakened him using the Tenha Kassatsu technique, leading to Souther's defeat by the Ujō Moshō Ha, a technique imbued with compassion. In the original manga, this defeat prompted Souther to reconcile with Ōgai's memory in his final moments, dying beside his master's shrine.
The film "Legend of Raoh: Chapter of Death in Love" presents an alternate conclusion. Here, Souther rejects Kenshiro's pity and commits suicide by stabbing his own heart, omitting reference to Ōgai or the mausoleum's connection to his mentor. This version excludes his emotional reconciliation.
Despite his rejection of emotions, Souther's actions—particularly building the mausoleum for Ōgai—suggest unresolved love for his adoptive father. His manga finale reflects this inner conflict as he sought solace with Ōgai's remains.
Souther's official character attributes are Power: 4, Speed: 5, Skills: 5, Looks: 4, and Charisma: 5.
