Description
Akira Fudo is a Japanese teenager who becomes the demon-human hybrid Devilman after fusing with the demon Amon during a Black Sabbath ritual arranged by his childhood friend Ryo Asuka. Orphaned following his parents' death, he lives with the Makimura family and initially appears timid, emotionally sensitive, and often bullied. His transformation grants him demonic attributes while preserving his human mind, shifting his personality to become more assertive, sarcastic, and combat-focused while retaining fierce protectiveness toward loved ones like Miki Makimura and Ryo Asuka. In human form, Akira has average height, a lean physique, brown curly medium-length hair with prominent sideburns, and typically wears a red shirt under a black jacket with grey lining, black pants, and brown shoes. As Devilman, his skin turns bluish-green, large wings with black exteriors and red interiors sprout from his back, and his body becomes muscular with spiked protrusions at the elbows and shoulders. Black fur covers his legs and genital area, he gains a prehensile tail, and his head features a red forehead, antennae, two pairs of small side wings, and black fur on the rear. His abilities include superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, durability, flight, energy projection through his forehead antennae capable of disintegration or ensnaring, retractable wrist blades called Devil Cutters, pyrokinesis (fire breath), enhanced regenerative healing that allows limb reattachment overnight, thermal manipulation to vaporize foes, and acute sensory perception. Even untransformed, he displays heightened physical prowess. Key battles include destroying the tortoise demon Jinmen, which forces him to obliterate the preserved face of his friend Sachiko; neutralizing the demon Pazuzu; and a misunderstanding-fueled confrontation with Cyborg 009 that leads both to lose an arm before they ally against the enhanced demon Atun (also called Azazel), whom Akira ultimately incinerates with fire breath. Broader events in his history include the murder of Miki Makimura by paranoid humans during global demon-induced hysteria, which shatters his faith in humanity and triggers vengeful rampages. His final battle against Ryo, revealed to be the angel Satan, typically ends in mutual annihilation or Akira's death. In sequels like Devilman Lady, his spirit navigates Hell while manifesting residual protective instincts. Alternate narratives depict the demon Amon usurping control after Miki's death, Akira resurrected for eternal conflict against Ryo in Violence Jack, and team-ups with other heroes against mutual threats. Across these stories, his struggle to preserve empathy amid demonic power remains central.
