Description
Meisuke Nueno, known to nearly everyone as Nube, is the main character of his story and a man who leads two inseparable lives. By day, he is the homeroom teacher for class 5-3 at Domori Elementary School, a position he holds dear. By night, or whenever danger strikes, he is Japan’s only teacher with the spiritual power to exorcise demons and fight evil spirits. Born with strong psychic abilities, Nube’s early life was marked by suffering. As a child, he was often bullied by his peers and became a frequent target for possession by malevolent spirits because he could not yet control his innate power. The most traumatic event of his youth involved a powerful snake demon; his elementary school teacher, Minako, sacrificed herself to exorcise the spirit and save him. This act of selfless courage became the defining moment of his life, inspiring him to become a teacher who protects children from supernatural threats, just as Minako had done for him.

In terms of personality, Nube is a study in contrasts. In his daily life, he appears clumsy, unserious, and financially irresponsible. He is perpetually poor, often surviving on his students’ leftovers or instant noodles just before payday, a situation worsened by his love for pachinko gambling. He also has a noticeable weakness for beautiful women and can be seen chasing after his colleague, Ritsuko Takahashi, or making comical, lighthearted mistakes. However, this goofy exterior vanishes completely when his students are in danger. In those moments, he becomes a figure of unwavering courage and self-sacrifice, showing a remarkably mature and steadfast mindset. He lives by a simple, powerful rule: never touch his students. He is a skilled and benevolent mentor who is willing to risk his own life to shield his class from evil, blending a serious, focused demeanor with deep, genuine care.

His role in the story is that of a protector and guide. Stationed at Domori Elementary, which seems to be a magnet for spiritual phenomena, Nube solves the dangerous cases that befall his students using his psychic powers. He does not charge money for his exorcisms, treating it as an extension of his teaching duty, which only adds to his perpetual poverty. His primary motivation is to be the person for his students that Minako-sensei was for him: a reliable adult who believes in them and saves them from forces they cannot understand. He fights not for glory, but to ensure the innocence and safety of children. His key relationships are central to his character. His students, including Hiroshi Tateno and Kyoko Inaba, are his main reason for fighting. He shares a deep, unspoken history with Kyoko, having known her since childhood. Another pivotal relationship is with Yukime, a Yuki-onna (snow woman) he saved years before the story begins; she eventually becomes his love interest and later his wife. He also has a complex relationship with the fox spirit Tamamo, who starts as an enemy but over time becomes a powerful ally.

Nube’s development throughout the series is significant, tied directly to his powers and past. The source of his strength is his left hand, which is always covered by a black glove. Underneath is the Oni no Te, or Demon Hand. This is not a normal hand but a demon from hell that he was forced to seal within the stump of his own hand during a battle to save a possessed student early in his teaching career. The soul of his beloved teacher, Minako, resides within the seal, helping to contain the demon’s power. While Nube can use this hand to devastating effect against spirits, he is typically only able to access a fraction of its true power, and using it always carries the risk of being consumed by the demon. As the story progresses, he learns to master this power, culminating in a final confrontation where the demon becomes a true part of him. In the sequel series, Jigoku Sensei Nube Neo, set years later, he loses the original Oni no Te and must undergo training with the Daitengu to master a new, more powerful version called the Oni no Te Neo.

Beyond the Demon Hand, Nube has several notable abilities and tools. He possesses a Sutra Book of the White-Robed Goddess, which he can use to create barriers or seal weaker spirits without resorting to his demonic hand. He also uses a crystal ball to see invisible spiritual phenomena and record images of monsters he has encountered. He has mastered other spiritual techniques, such as youshin jutsu, which allows him to create a separate spiritual body, an astral projection, that he can send out to fight or investigate while his real body remains behind. This alter ego, which he once named Akira Hinokami, is a powerful tool that is immune to physical damage but requires intense concentration to maintain. Through all his battles and struggles, Nube remains dedicated to his simple goal: to stand between the children of Domori Elementary and the evil spirits that threaten them.
