Shiro Kato is the younger brother of Saburo Kato, former leader of the Yamato's Black Tiger squadron who perished at the end of Yamato 2. Succeeding his brother, Shiro assumes the same role and responsibilities within the Yamato crew. He leads the Cosmo Tiger squadron during Be Forever Yamato and continues this command into Season 3, The Bolar Wars. Introduced as his brother's replacement, he carries forward the legacy within the Yamato's fighter wing. In the Star Blazers English adaptation, he is named Cory Conroy. Shiro Kato reappears as a Cosmo Tiger pilot in Final Yamato.
