Description
Shiro Sanada bears bionic limbs from a childhood accident that killed his sister, initially fueling resentment against scientific arrogance. His family background is largely undocumented. He graduated top of his class from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and later studied at the National Space Defense Academy. There, he forged significant bonds with classmates Mamoru Kodai and Kaoru Niimi. Sanada carried enduring guilt over his perceived failure to adequately repair Mamoru Kodai's ship, the Yukikaze, before its final mission, considering himself partially responsible for Kodai's presumed death.

Assigned to the Strategy Department 9th Section, Far-East District Staff Office, Sanada proved instrumental in Program Yamato, the successor to Project Izumo. He deciphered Iscandarian blueprints for the Wave-Motion Engine, leading to his invention of the pivotal Wave-Motion Gun for the space battleship Yamato. His technical prowess drew partly from consultations with his former professor, an authority in Quantum Wave-Motion Theory afflicted by severe memory impairment.

As both Executive Officer and Technical Officer during the Yamato's 2199 maiden voyage to Iscandar, Sanada oversaw scientific analysis, engineering, and strategic assessments. His logical thinking and crisis-management skills repeatedly proved critical to the ship's survival. Post-mission, he opposed the Earth Federation government's military expansion, particularly the Wave-Motion Gun Fleet development.

In 2202, a cosmic message from the goddess Teresa of Telezart prompted Sanada's return to the reactivated Yamato to confront the Gatlantis Empire (White Comet Empire). He initially commanded the modified Dreadnought-class Battlecarrier Hyuga within the 65th Escort Corps during its peace mission to the Salezar system, participating in engagements against Dezariam's forces in the Iscandar Incident. Dismissed afterward, he was later reassigned to the Yamato stationed at Icarus Observatory for Operation DAD. There, he led the observation team for Sasha Iscandar Kodai, the hybrid daughter of his deceased friend Mamoru Kodai. Following the observatory battle, Sanada resumed his role as Yamato Executive Officer for the campaign against Dezariam's homeland.

Sanada exhibits analytical rigor, emotional reserve, and a strong sense of duty. He frequently counseled acting captain Susumu Kodai, evolving into a trusted advisor and de facto elder spokesperson after the deaths of Captain Juzo Okita and Engineer Hikozaemon Tokugawa. Though reluctant to assume formal command, he temporarily led the Yamato during critical engagements, like the Galman attack while responding to a distress call. His calm, mature demeanor provided stability in crises, though he remained private about personal emotions and burdens.

Later, Sanada attained the position of leading Earth Defense Force commander, succeeding Heikuro Todo. This role marked his transition from primary technical responsibilities to broader strategic leadership within Earth's military structure.
