TV-Series
Description
Dr. Sakezo Sado operates as chief medical officer on the space battleship Yamato. Initially trained as a veterinarian, he shifted to human medicine after an unsuccessful veterinary career, rising to become the ship's surgeon. His medical skills rank first-class, yet he frequently indulges in heavy sake drinking, resulting in alcohol-related mishaps that provide comic relief. He typically maintains a carefree attitude but turns serious during health emergencies or when denouncing misconduct.

Sado shares a forthright dynamic with Captain Juzo Okita, speaking candidly to him unlike most crew. Aware of Okita’s terminal illness, he prioritizes his treatment and urges him to undergo surgery. During Earth’s return voyage in the original series, Sado examined Okita after the captain collapsed and declared him dead without checking vital signs—a misdiagnosis. Okita survived, receiving emergency surgery post-Earth’s restoration and a prolonged recovery. Sado later confessed this error publicly.

His medical approach proves unconventional, sometimes employing brusque methods like surgery without anesthesia while ordering patients to endure pain silently. His veterinary background occasionally surfaces in pragmatic or harsh mannerisms. In combat situations, such as engagements against Goruba mechanized planets, he performs emergency surgeries amid ship damage and casualties.

The character features across franchise iterations. In the original timeline, including *The Comet Empire* and *Final Yamato*, he remains primary medic. The *2199* reboot reimagines him as head of the medical division with heightened competence, including an unconfirmed incident of disarming mutineers. A live-action adaptation presents a gender-flipped version. His design reflects Leiji Matsumoto’s signature "potato-shaped" comedic style, with early concepts depicting traditional Japanese clogs later replaced by standard shoes.

His name "Sakezo" translates to "brewing," thematically aligning with his sake consumption. He embodies a recurring Matsumoto archetype, often portrayed as a medical professional or teacher.
