TV Special
Description
Kengo Akechi serves as a police superintendent in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's First Investigative Division, acting as superior to Isamu Kenmochi and Tadano. Initially introduced as highly intelligent yet prideful, particularly looking down on Hajime Kindaichi during their first encounter in the "Snow Yaksha Legend Murder Case," his arrogance stemmed from an exceptional background. He graduated from the University of Tokyo Faculty of Law as part of the career group and became the youngest recipient of the Police Commissioner's Award. Born into wealth, he attended the prestigious Shuo High School, earning the nickname "Shuo's Holmes" for solving murders, including his first documented case, "The First Case of Young Akechi." He achieved perfect scores on entrance exams and participated in activities like music concerts and fencing camps.

Akechi possesses extensive skills. He commands multiple languages, including English, French, Mandarin, Cantonese, and German, partly attributed to his time with the Los Angeles Police Department. He is proficient in violin, fencing, and chess, even advancing to the World Chess Championship finals. He can pilot and hack passenger planes. During his student years, he worked part-time at a cram school, earning the moniker "god of entrance exams" for his success in sending students to top universities like the University of Tokyo.

His personality undergoes significant evolution. After Kindaichi critiques his arrogance during the "Snow Yaksha Legend Murder Case" – a flaw that derails his investigation – his demeanor becomes less hostile and more playful. While maintaining a rivalry with Kindaichi, they share mutual respect, and Akechi acts as an ally during complex cases. He remains consistently polite, using honorifics even with subordinates and high school students, and refuses to tolerate impoliteness. Despite his pride, he demonstrates a strong sense of justice, vowing never to back down from uncovering the truth, even against powerful figures. He subtly relies on others, such as leaving search records for colleagues to follow during a confrontation with Gendo Fujiwara in "Inspector Akechi Case Files."

Akechi's backstory includes a three-year stint with the Los Angeles Police Department, where he developed a romantic relationship with a colleague named Patricia. His experiences there frequently inform his anecdotes, though his current relationship status with Patricia is unclear. Both his parents were police officers; he inherited his looks and intellect from his mother, while his personality resembles his father's. Akechi initially had no interest in joining the police, viewing detective work as "unrewarding hard work," but his path changed after the "300 million yen incident" and his interactions with crime producer Takato, whom he encountered in Los Angeles while disguised as a magician named Maskman.

The spin-off "Inspector Akechi Case Files," detailing his promotion from inspector to superintendent, portrays him as a free-spirited detective with a sweet tooth, particularly for apple pie. This series explores his transformation into a "sad villain" due to professional and personal challenges, though his blunder in the "Snow Yaksha Legend Murder Case" later softens his rigid demeanor. It also highlights his early investigative work, such as in the "Student Kengo Akechi Case Files," where he solved a murder at a university festival involving a serial rapist victim seeking revenge.

Akechi's appearance features silver hair, glasses, and a tall, attractive stature. He typically wears a light yellow coat over a light blue shirt and pants. In later series, his hair is depicted as messier than in initial appearances.
