Description
Jam-ojisan is a kind, warm-hearted baker operating in a bread factory within the Anpanman universe. His extensive travels in youth granted him broad knowledge, evident in the books filling his room shelves. Beyond baking, he excels in mechanical invention, constructing and maintaining mecha machines like the Anpanman Mobile and repairing robotic characters.

He unintentionally created Anpanman when a shooting star landed in his oven during an anpan bake, forging a deeply paternal bond. He raised Anpanman, encouraging him to always strive for his best and act on his convictions. Jam-ojisan also created other characters including Melonpanna, Rollpanna, and possibly Currypanman—though Currypanman’s origins vary ambiguously across media.

He lives with Batako-san, his dedicated assistant and close familial companion despite lacking blood ties, and Cheese, a dog saved by Anpanman who became his loyal friend. Jam-ojisan supports younger characters he helped create, offering Melonpanna and Creampanda encouragement akin to his guidance of a young Anpanman. His relationship with Rollpanna is complicated by her dual hearts; he retains a soft spot for her as his creation and invited her to reside at the bakery, but her blue heart of evil requires distance for safety.

Visually resembling a human with gray hair, fluffy eyebrows, a mustache, chef’s hat, white attire, and apron, Jam-ojisan is established as a fairy in a world without humans—as is Batako-san. His personality mirrors Anpanman’s altruism, driven by a desire to help everyone and spread happiness. An early 1973 picture book depicted him smoking a pipe, omitted in later anime and film adaptations. His background and motivations draw indirect inspiration from creator Takashi Yanase’s wartime starvation experiences, reinforcing Jam-ojisan’s thematic role in providing sustenance and care.
