Cheese, alternatively known as Cheese the wise dog or Cheese the super watchdog, is a small light brown dog featuring short rabbit-shaped ears and a dark brown tail tip. Earlier manga and picture book renditions depicted his ears as darker. He resides in a doghouse at a bakery and appears in nearly every episode.

His origin traces back to being a lost puppy discovered crying in the forest by Anpanman during his inaugural patrol. Anpanman rescued him by sharing part of his own head to satisfy Cheese's hunger, forging an enduring bond. Batako later named him "Cheese" at the bakery. While his breed remains officially unidentified, initial artistic designs evoked a basset hound.

Cheese displays remarkable intelligence, comprehending human language and executing complex tasks despite primarily communicating through barks. Early manga versions showed him forming sentences ending with "woof," though the anime transitioned to barks alone—understood by other characters. He actively supports bakery operations, frequently driving delivery vehicles and being the first to detect SOS signals. His exceptional scent-tracking ability allows him to locate individuals by following trails.

Personality-wise, he provides comic relief through dramatic, silly antics. He exhibits a voracious appetite, eagerly consuming food, and demonstrates bravery by rushing into perilous situations to aid Anpanman. Cheese often manages Anpanman’s replacement heads during crises. Though generally helpful, he occasionally evades chores due to laziness. His locomotion evolved from mostly quadrupedal to primarily bipedal over time, though he retains classic canine sitting and sleeping postures. He sleeps outdoors in a loaf-shaped doghouse equipped with dedicated food and water bowls.

Cheese shares a close friendship with Butterko and harbors romantic feelings for Rare Cheese. His role expanded from initial patrol duties to wider assistance within Anpanman's hero network.
