Description
SL-Man is a sentient steam locomotive within the Anpanman universe, first appearing in Episode 62a. Found rusted and inoperative during a fierce storm, a lightning strike fells a tree onto him, rendering him comatose. Baikinman discovers him, mistakenly believing him non-sentient, and kidnaps him. After consuming Dokeen's fruit, SL-Man regains full strength and seeks to repay Baikinman. Exploiting this gratitude, Baikinman deceives SL-Man into viewing Anpanman as an enemy. Consequently, SL-Man attempts to push Anpanman's bakery off a cliff. Anpanman intervenes, reveals the deception, and convinces SL-Man of his benevolent nature. SL-Man then aids in stopping Baikinman's scheme.

Physically, SL-Man resembles a steam engine inspired by Thomas the Tank Engine, capable of running on and off rails with moving arms. The initials "SL" on his cab signify "steam locomotive." He operates without a coal tender, a noted deviation from real-world mechanics, and cannot function underwater as it extinguishes his fire.

His primary role involves transporting goods and children. SL-Man possesses locomotive-specific abilities: emitting an "SOS" signal through his smokestack during emergencies and producing black smoke to create distractions, notably used against Baikinman.

SL-Man has one child, Poppo-chan. Their explicitly defined familial bond is non-biological; they existed separately before meeting in Episode 1089a, which solidifies their relationship despite their independent origins.

Beyond animation, life-sized versions of SL-Man serve as ride attractions: at the Anpanman Children's Museum in Kobe (an outdoor route for general audiences) and Osaka (an indoor route for younger children). He also appears as playground equipment at the Takashi Yanase Memorial Hall. His popularity within the franchise is partly attributed to Japan's cultural affinity for trains, particularly steam locomotives. Following his debut, he reappeared several years later and remains a recurring character.
