Description
Pekkle, officially Ahiru no Pekkle, is a male duck character created by Sanrio in 1989. Hailing from Cairns, Australia, and born on July 27th (a Leo), he sports white feathers with orange legs, feet, and bill. He is typically seen wearing patterned t-shirts, often featuring fish designs. Despite being a duck, Pekkle is notably poor at swimming and cannot fly, though he dreams of becoming a lifeguard and soaring in the sky. His favorite food is rice balls, and he carries a treasured bucket.
Gentle, kind-hearted, and laid-back, Pekkle loves dancing—especially tap dancing—and singing. He takes tap lessons and dances to beats when his friend Pitch claps. Pekkle plays the keyboard in Hapidanbui, a Sanrio boy band formed in 2020 with Tuxedosam, Hangyodon, Pochacco, Bad Badtz-Maru, and Keroppi. The group spreads happiness with the message "It's okay! You're still you, I'm sure it will work." Pekkle shows "motherly" kindness within the band, often tidying up or supporting others. He became Hapidanbui's leader through rock-paper-scissors, a role fans find suited to his gentle nature. Pekkle also performs stand-up comedy with Pochacco at Sanrio Puroland.
His friends include his girlfriend Ruby, a loyal but occasionally tearful duck; Pitch (a fish who teaches him swimming); Chap (an aspiring surfer fish); Ran (a fish aspiring to be a model); Boot (a strong duck); Curl (a wealthy, intelligent duck); and Frills (Ruby's fashionable cousin). Pekkle's early stories expanded in the manga "Ganbare! Pekkle," serialized for six and a half years in Sanrio's "Ichigo Shimbun" magazine, highlighting his helpful nature.
Pekkle starred in the anime "Ahiru no Pekkle’s Aladdin and the Magic Lamp," playing Aladdin opposite Ruby's Princess Jasmine. He appears in the Roblox game "My Hello Kitty Cafe" with four outfits and resides in "Hello Kitty Island Adventure," restoring a dance hall on Gemstone Mountain. Gifts matching his "Music," "Mountain," or "Calm" tags—like the Mountain Soundtrack or Stacked Stones—increase friendship levels, unlocking rewards such as avatar palettes and quests like "Bring Back the Swing."
His popularity in Sanrio Character Rankings peaked at 5th in 1992 and reached 10th in 2025. He dominated Hong Kong’s rankings from 2018–2021 and won the "International Award" in 2020. His resurgence since 2020 is linked to Hapidanbui and his expressive eyebrows—uncommon among classic Sanrio characters—which aided deeper storytelling. Collaborations include donuts with Floresta, jewelry with Clover, cakes with Priroll, and serving as Mizuho Bank’s image character.
