Description
Pekkle, officially known as Ahiru no Pekkle ("Duck Pekkle") in Japanese, is a male duck character created by Sanrio. Originating from Cairns, Australia, he celebrates his birthday on July 27th, making him a Leo. Pekkle has white feathers with orange legs, feet, and bill, typically depicted wearing a t-shirt.
Gentle, kind-hearted, and laid-back, Pekkle's demeanor is occasionally mistaken for laziness. He actively pursues hobbies including tap dancing, singing, and body surfing, often practicing on the beach with friends. Despite being a duck, he struggles with swimming and harbors an aspiration to become a lifeguard. Pekkle also dreams of flying, an ability he has not yet achieved.
His close relationships include his loyal girlfriend Ruby, another domestic duck, and his aquatic companion Pitch, a fish who attempts to teach him swimming. Additional friends are Chap, Ran, Boot, Chara, Curl, and Frills, each with distinct personalities and aspirations. Pekkle treasures his bucket.
As a member of the Sanrio boy band Hapidanbui, promoting positivity, Pekkle plays the keyboard alongside Tuxedosam, Hangyodon, Pochacco, Badtz-Maru, and Keroppi. Pekkle also performs standup comedy with Pochacco at Sanrio Puroland.
Beyond merchandise, Pekkle appears in Sanrio animated works. Early OVAs feature him in stories such as "The Great Swimming Race" (1993), "Find the Secret Treasure" (1993), "Aladdin and His Magic Lamp" (1993), and "The Adventures of Sinbad" (1993). Within the "Hello Kitty's Animation Theater" anthology series, Pekkle stars in two fairy tale adaptations: "Drakestail" (episode 9) and "The Ugly Duckling" (episode 11). He also portrays Aladdin opposite Ruby's Princess Jasmine in "Ahiru no Pekkle’s Aladdin and the Magic Lamp". In interactive media, Pekkle is a playable character with multiple outfits in the Roblox game "My Hello Kitty Cafe".
Pekkle's popularity is reflected in Sanrio Character Rankings, peaking at 5th place in 1992. He maintained strong international appeal, particularly ranking 1st in Hong Kong from 2018 to 2021. He earned the "International Award" in 2020, placed 16th in 2022 and 2023, and rose to 10th in 2025. Commercial collaborations include donut lines with Floresta, jewelry with Clover, and banking partnerships with Mizuho Bank.
