Description
Kashin Koji, also known as Koji Kashin, functions as an elderly doctor in the Itto-Ryu faction's core membership. He operates a medicine shop, regularly visited by fellow member Doa Yoshino. He becomes irritated when she uses his real name, potentially compromising his efforts to remain inconspicuous.
Koji provides strategic support to the Itto-Ryu, such as supplying Ozuhan with an Edo Palace map to assist Rin, Doa, Manji, and Isaku during their infiltration. He later observes the palace breakout alongside Anotsu and other members from a distance. During the faction’s retreat from Edo, Koji serves as a decoy, using his knowledge of mountainous terrain to set traps against pursuing Rokki-dan members like Inroku Ban and Ryo Soma.
His combat style relies on preparation and chemical weapons over physical prowess. Koji deploys pots containing seashells and nitric acid, which mix to release carbon dioxide. This gas exhausts opponents through induced heavy breathing, causing unconsciousness or death. He supplements these traps with acupuncture needles, employing them as precise killing instruments and concealed armor—needles over his heart mitigate a near-fatal gunshot wound from Ban.
Koji demonstrates tactical awareness in his final confrontation. After explaining his methods to the incapacitated Ban, he offers a painless death via needles. Ban refuses and shoots himself to regain alertness before shooting Koji. Surviving due to his needle armor, Koji retaliates by fatally throwing needles into Ban’s head. Koji later encounters Ryo, who feigns unconsciousness from the gas. While considering using her as a warning to the Rokki-dan about the Itto-Ryu’s strength, he takes three arrows to the back. Ryo fatally stabs him in the throat with a fourth arrow as he attempts a final, failed counterattack with his needles.
Sosuke Abayama values Koji’s expertise, entrusting him with the decoy mission for his territorial knowledge. Despite being among the Itto-Ryu’s physically weakest members, Koji asserts he could single-handedly defeat the entire Rokki-dan given sufficient preparation time.
