Description
Mark Venture, born Daisuke Shima in Okinawa, Japan, on August 15, 2178, came from generations of sailors. His father, Commander Daigo Shima, commanded the UNCN cruiser *Murasame* and instilled the principle: "a sailor never abandons another sailor." Daigo Shima died in 2191 during Earth's disastrous first contact battle with the Garmillas Empire. This loss drove Venture to abandon merchant marine plans and join the United Nations Cosmo Navy.
Graduating from the Space Officer Training Academy on March 31, 2198, he served in the 101st Airborne Corps. As Earth faced extinction from Garmillas radiation bombardment, he was recruited for Project Izumo, the evacuation plan that evolved into Operation M. On Mars, Venture and his close friend Derek Wildstar (Susumu Kodai) retrieved a device from a crashed spacecraft, containing Wave Motion Engine plans and a message from Queen Starsha of Iscandar. This device enabled the retrofit of the battleship Yamato (renamed *Argo*) for its mission to retrieve the radiation-cleansing Cosmo DNA.
Promoted to lieutenant and chief navigator of the *Argo*, Venture's piloting proved vital during humanity's first warp flight and battles like the Rainbow Star Cluster and Planet Gamilas. During the voyage, a Gamilon pilot's claim that humans started the war confronted Venture with his father's death trauma. His initial disbelief turned to anger when a former subordinate of Daigo confirmed Commander Philip Venture fired first under orders, leading to an outburst against Wildstar before their reconciliation. Venture also tacitly supported efforts for peace with Gamilas.
In the Comet Empire conflict (2201–2202), Venture continued as the *Argo*'s chief navigator under Captain Wildstar. He developed a deep, unrequited love for Trelaina, the last survivor of Telezart, communicating via interstellar radio. When Trelaina sacrificed herself to save the *Argo* from Prince Zordar, Venture channeled his heartbreak into resolve. During a later mutiny, he pretended to side with conspirators to protect Wildstar, refusing orders to abandon him on a planet, resulting in a standoff resolved by security forces.
After the Comet Empire's defeat, Venture briefly served in the transport fleet. In 2202, he received a telepathic message resembling his deceased father, urging him to rejoin the *Argo* for a mission to Telezart. Hesitant and considering resignation, he ultimately rejoined disguised as a security officer.
In 2203, during the Galman-Bolar War, Venture remained the *Argo*'s chief navigator. Facing a crisis where a stray proton missile destabilized Earth's sun, the ship sought a new homeworld. Venture died during the Aquarius conflict in *Final Yamato* (2203). As the *Argo* fought to prevent the water planet Aquarius from destroying Earth, he suffered fatal wounds during a Deingilian attack.
