Description
James Laurence, wealthy grandfather of Theodore "Laurie" Laurence and neighbor to the March family, resides alone in a grand mansion, grappling with loneliness and occasional clashes with his spirited grandson. Regret over estranging his son—Laurie’s father—due to disapproval of the marriage drives his resolve to dedicate himself to Laurie’s care as atonement.

Initially stern and reserved, he maintains a quiet demeanor yet harbors profound kindness and generosity. A past friendship with Mrs. March’s father and admiration for the family’s charitable spirit forge his bond with the Marches. This connection cements his role as their benefactor, providing financial aid during crises: funding Marmee’s journey to Washington when Mr. March falls ill and replacing the March sisters’ sacrificed Christmas breakfast with an elaborate feast. His protective nature surfaces as he watches over the sisters in their parents’ absence.

His deepest bond forms with Beth March, who reminds him of his deceased granddaughter. He gifts her his granddaughter’s piano, sparking a tender, grandfather-granddaughter relationship. Beth conquers her initial fear of him, showing gratitude through gestures like embroidering slippers. Their friendship offers mutual comfort, easing his solitude while granting Beth emotional support. His generosity extends to granting Jo access to his personal library, nurturing her literary ambitions.

With Laurie, James Laurence adopts a stern yet deeply loving approach. He discourages Laurie’s musical interests—a trait linked to his rebellious father—and steers him toward conventional academic and business pursuits, fueling tension as Laurie craves independence. Ultimately, love prevails: he supports Laurie’s European trip to heal after Jo rejects his marriage proposal, revealing flexibility and empathy.

In the anime adaptation, his role expands when the March family relocates to Newcord after their home is destroyed in the Civil War. He resides nearby in a villa, sustaining his supportive role amid hardships like Mr. March’s war injury. His interactions in Newcord reinforce his enduring presence as a guardian figure.
