Noeru Hiragi is a young office lady working at a call center, enduring routine stress and isolation while living alone in a small apartment. Her solitary life is abruptly disrupted when her mother unexpectedly sends her a six-drawer wardrobe without explanation. Contacting her mother to protest this imposition yields only the cryptic reply that it is "her turn," implying an unspoken family tradition.

Initially resistant to the wardrobe's intrusion into her limited space, she tries ignoring it. This strategy fails when she returns home one night to discover a strange child eating her food. Investigation reveals the wardrobe houses six supernatural children. They identify themselves as household spirits ("hobs") bound to serve successive generations of the Hiiragi family mistresses.
