TV-Series
Description
Shun Kuroeda is a driver for the Mobile Assault Police, specializing in combating science-based crimes. He pilots the black S.I.B. Max (Sonic Interceptor Black Max), a Drive Head modeled after Drive Head 00, its color reflecting the "black" kanji in his surname. His appearance features spiked red hair, frequently covered by a blue cap bearing a shark image, a similarly shark-motifed blue jacket, black gloves, and tactical mission gear.
Debuting in Episode 19, Shun's pursuit of the wanted scientist Dr. Karigari initially causes confusion for the main Drive Head team, who mistake the S.I.B. Max for an enemy. He operates with two support vehicles, Sonic Jet Eagle and Sonic Doberman John, which combine with his Drive Head to form S.I.B. Mega Max. Unlike the child protagonists chosen by AI for purity, Shun pilots as a skilled prodigy using a Drive Gear without AI.
His investigations focus on "Black Chips," corruptive hardware endangering machines and humans, leading him to cooperate with the Mobile Rescue Police drivers during major incidents. He assists Jin and Mikoto Ishino in locating Black Chip distributors using their Drive Head's scans and aids Gō Kurumada against Evil AI-controlled Walker Vehicles. Shun demonstrates tactical ingenuity, like orchestrating a diversionary fire to access the Evil AI's source, the restricted Tower of Babel.
In the web series, Shun investigates a stolen stealth fighter and an android linked to the Evil AI, later named Terra. This culminates in the film where he transitions to piloting the upgraded C.I.B. Max (Cyclone Interceptor Black Max). Forced to destroy his hijacked S.I.B. Max to prevent Terra's misuse, he fails to stop Terra's escape. During this incident, he temporarily supplies substitute drivers for the Mobile Rescue Police while his new Drive Head undergoes repairs.
Shun exhibits an impulsive, tenacious demeanor, especially when apprehending criminals, yet prioritizes civilian safety and respects the rescue team's duties. His relationship with Karigari evolves from adversarial to reluctantly cooperative, notably saving the scientist during an unmanned Walker Vehicle attack. He maintains professional ties with Mobile Rescue Police leaders like Jō Kurumada and Takahito Saionji, serving as an older-brother figure to the child drivers, acknowledging their courage despite initial surprise at their youth.
The kanji for "black" (黒) in his surname references his Drive Head's color, while "Shun" (隼) means "falcon," a motif reinforced by his aggressive tactics. In-universe media reports note he enjoys sweets, a preference not influencing his operational conduct.
