TV-Series
Description
Kasumi Haruno, a fifth-grader in Class 5-1 at Takatomi Elementary School, holds school idol status. Her daydreaming nature pairs with brutal honesty and sociability, earning her many friendships. After Sonic Interceptor rescues her from a monorail accident, she develops an intense fascination with Drive Head robots, particularly that model. This sparks her curiosity about its driver, whom she envisions as a tall, handsome prince-like figure, prompting her to seek encounters with this unknown hero.
Her interactions with classmate Gou Kurumada begin contentiously; she mocks his immature behavior and habitual classroom exits, unaware they facilitate his secret role as Sonic Interceptor’s driver. Though her attitude toward Gou softens over time, she dismisses any connection between him and the driver due to his perceived clumsiness. She maintains friendships with Mikoto Ishino, Azusa, and Nozomi, socializing outside school, and bonds with Akasaka TV announcer Yuri Sasagawa over shared Drive Head enthusiasm.
During a class trip to the Great Ama no Ukihashi suspension bridge, Kasumi comforts a lost child amid disaster, giving him her limited-edition Sonic Interceptor phone strap while expressing faith in Drive Head’s rescue capabilities. Later, she discovers Taiga Yagura inside Sonic Interceptor during a school event, mistakenly identifying him as the driver. Suspecting Gou, she follows him through a malfunctioning secret chute in the school gym, accidentally accessing the Mobile Rescue Police headquarters. She encounters the dog Axel and explores the base but collapses from illness before confirming driver identities. Told the incident was a dream, she later reinforces her belief in the base’s reality upon spotting Axel with Gou.
Kasumi auditions for Akasaka TV’s "Dream Catch" game show to become head of the Mobile Rescue Police and meet the driver. En route, her train is hijacked by the Evil AI. Cyclone Interceptor’s driver (Gou using a voice changer) guides her via phone to direct passengers to safety. She abandons the audition but cherishes the interaction. On a forestry field trip, she discusses unmanned vehicles with Gou, who reassures her about Drive Head drivers’ irreplaceable role.
In the theatrical film, Kasumi confronts Gou about his reduced classroom exits while admitting her waning interest in Cyclone Interceptor. Later, trapped on a bus sucked into Terra’s expanding metal mass, her truncated call to the Mobile Rescue Police enables Cyclone Interceptor to locate and rescue her. This reaffirms her fandom, and she observes a correlation between Gou’s absences and Drive Head deployments—yet rejects theories linking him to the driver role due to her idealized pilot image.
Kasumi appears briefly without dialogue in the 2018 web series. Her name means "mist," and her surname combines "spring" and "field."
