Description
Cheese, alternatively known as Cheese the wise dog or Cheese the super watchdog, is a recurring figure within the Anpanman universe. He resides in a doghouse at Uncle Jam's bakery and appears in almost every episode of the main series. His origin began when Anpanman rescued him as a young puppy, discovering him alone and crying in the forest. Anpanman offered part of his own head to feed the starving puppy, forging their lasting bond. Following this rescue, Batako-san brought Cheese to the bakery and gave him his name. His life before being found in the forest is not detailed.
Physically, Cheese is a small, light brown dog characterized by short rabbit-shaped ears and a dark brown tip on his tail. Earlier depictions in manga and picture books rendered his ears a darker brown than his body. His design has evolved: while initially shown mostly walking on four legs, he now frequently stands upright on two legs, though he retains typical canine sitting and sleeping positions. He lives in a loaf-shaped dog house complete with food and water bowls.
His personality blends dramatic flair with silliness, often providing comic relief. He demonstrates bravery by venturing into dangerous situations alongside Anpanman and frequently assists in transporting Anpanman's replacement heads. Despite his loyalty, he exhibits laziness, particularly in avoiding chores. He possesses a large appetite and eats hungrily. His intelligence is evident: he understands human language, participates in tasks such as baking or driving the Anpanman-Go vehicle, and is often the first to detect distress signals or SOS calls.
His abilities include exceptional scent tracking, enabling him to locate individuals by following their trails. While he communicates through barks rather than speech in the television series, other characters intuitively understand him, attributed to their close bonds and his inherent nature as a "wise dog." Earlier manga versions featured him speaking in sentences followed by "woof," a trait discontinued in the animated adaptation.
Notable trivia includes his romantic relationship with Rare Cheese and his debut in the second Anpanman manga. In that original storyline, Baikinman exploited him to target Anpanman's fear of dogs, though he was ultimately tamed by Butterko. His exact breed remains officially unidentified.
Within the film "Inochi no Hoshi no Dolly," Cheese appears among the cast. No unique character development, specific narrative function, or distinct interactions related solely to that movie's plot are documented. Information detailing his role in other spin-offs, seasons, or additional movies beyond this film appearance is similarly not specified.
