Description
Azaka Kokutō, the younger sister of Mikiya Kokutō, was separated from her family and adopted by her uncle after a shared childhood loss. This event ignited her romantic feelings for Mikiya, driving her to launch a "Brother Conquering Campaign" despite their blood relation. She attended Reien Girl's Academy, befriending Fujino Asagami and rooming with Shizune Seo. Returning to Mifune City in her late teens, she discovered Mikiya's close bond with Shiki Ryougi, whom she then saw as a romantic rival.

Seeking to compete with Shiki, Azaka apprenticed herself to Touko Aozaki in mid-1998. Though devoid of innate Magic Circuits, she possessed a natural ability for spontaneous combustion, classified as ESP-like pyrokinesis. Touko equipped her with Salamander Skin Gloves, a Mystic Code enabling effective ignition spells. Her combat incantations used musical notes (Alto, Forte, Mezzo Forte), and her Origin, "Taboo," mirrored her attraction to forbidden concepts.

Her supernatural investigations frequently involved Shiki and Mikiya. In July 1998, she unintentionally aided Fujino Asagami, who hid her intent to kill an upperclassman. Later, in November 1998, Azaka attempted to demonstrate her magecraft to Mikiya and Shiki using Touko's pen, leading to Touko reprimanding her for revealing secrets. Shiki stormed off after Azaka questioned her gender, underscoring Azaka's resentment towards their bond.

Azaka's primary arc unfolded in January 1999 during the Reien Academy incident. Partnering with Shiki to investigate memory-altering fairies linked to a student's suicide, Azaka initially relied on Shiki's Mystic Eyes as she couldn't perceive the fairies. Facing the mind-controlling magus Satsuki Kurogiri (God's Word), she used Shiki's walkman to counter his auditory manipulation with music. She confronted orchestrator Misaya Ouji during a mass suicide attempt, defeating her by incinerating the fairies through heat detection and delivering a decisive kick. Afterward, she chose not to pursue Kurogiri's motives, instead spending a day with Mikiya.

Following Touko's departure from Mifune City after early 1999 events, Azaka considered abandoning magecraft due to waning motivation. Touko suggested she might continue remotely via mail assignments, potentially becoming her "head apprentice" in the future. Her arc concluded with her acknowledging the impracticality of her feelings for Mikiya, while retaining her core traits: outwardly composed yet fiercely determined when challenged.

Later media featured Azaka briefly in "Future Gospel" during Shizune Seo's precognition subplot. She was referenced in "Final Record," experiencing simulated death scenarios via Touko's mystical movie projector alongside Shizune, Fujino, and Misaya Ouji before Shiki freed them. Her relationships remained consistent: adversarial yet cooperative with Shiki, mentor-student with Touko, and unrequitedly devoted to Mikiya.
