Based on L. Frank Baum's classic story, this character originated as Nicholas "Nick" Chopper, a human woodsman in Oz's Munchkin Country. He worked as a lumberjack and fell in love with a Munchkin girl named Nimmie Amee. Their planned marriage was thwarted when Nimmie Amee's employer, an old woman unwilling to lose her servant, enlisted the Wicked Witch of the East. The Witch enchanted Nick's axe, causing it to slip and sever his limbs one by one. After each accident, local tinsmith Ku-Klip replaced the lost body part with tin prosthetics. Eventually, his entire body—including his head—became tin, with his soul transferring to this new form. Lacking a physical heart, he believed he could no longer love and abandoned his marriage plans. Later, a rainstorm caught him chopping wood, rusting him solid. He remained immobilized in the forest for a year until Dorothy Gale and the Scarecrow discovered him during their Yellow Brick Road journey. Oiled and freed, he joined their quest to meet the Wizard of Oz, hoping to gain a heart. Despite his metallic form, he retained deep emotions and sensitivity, often grieving over minor harms like crushing an insect and frequently worrying about rusting. He carried an axe as his signature tool and relied on an oil can for maintenance. After the Wizard granted him a symbolic heart, he became Emperor of the Winkie Country in Oz's western quadrant.
