Description
Morpeko is an Electric/Dark-type Pokémon known as the Two-Sided Pokémon. This small, bipedal rodent has two distinct forms: Full Belly Mode and Hangry Mode. In Full Belly Mode, it displays a light yellow body with brown and black markings, black eyes with white pupils, and pink cheek spots. When hunger and hormonal imbalances trigger a change, it shifts into Hangry Mode, its body turning dark purple with black markings and its eyes becoming red with an angry expression. This process converts the Electric-type energy in its cheek sacs into Dark-type energy.
Due to its small stomach and continuous energy generation in its cheeks, Morpeko is constantly hungry. It carries electrically roasted seeds in pocket-like pouches, eating them to satisfy its hunger and maintain energy. Extended periods without food cause it to grow aggressive and violent, committing acts described as evil until it eats again. Its ability, Hunger Switch, facilitates the form change at the end of each turn in battle, though its dual typing remains consistent regardless of mode.
In the anime, Morpeko first appeared as a wild Pokémon in the Galar region, where it repeatedly stole and consumed food from Jessie, James, and Meowth of Team Rocket. Its relentless hunger led it to follow the trio to the Kanto region, continuing to deplete their food supplies. After a series of encounters where its hunger-driven behavior caused ongoing problems, James captured Morpeko.
The Pokémon exhibits split personalities aligned with its forms. In Full Belly Mode, it is generally amiable and approachable, though consistently focused on eating. In Hangry Mode, it becomes malicious, aggressive, and destructive, often attacking with its signature move, Aura Wheel, to send targets flying. The transformation occurs not only from lack of food but also in response to emotional triggers, such as jealousy toward James's other Pokémon, like Mime Jr.
Even after being captured, Morpeko’s insatiable appetite and form-shifting tendencies continue to shape its interactions. It has participated in events like eating contests, where its hunger sometimes provokes mid-competition form changes and subsequent outbursts. Its behavior remains consistent across appearances, often prioritizing food over safety or instructions, such as ignoring warnings during dangerous encounters with Durant colonies to focus on eating.
Morpeko is also known to accompany other trainers, such as Marnie, and is often seen outside its Poké Ball.
