Description
Kaoru Hanabishi is the eldest son of Yuji Hanabishi, head of the Hanabishi Zaibatsu, and Kumi Honjo. His parents never married, rendering his status illegitimate. After his father's death in Kaoru's early childhood, his paternal grandfather, Gen'ichiro Hanabishi, took custody to groom him as heir. This period brought severe physical and emotional abuse, including brutal beatings with a bamboo cane that left permanent scars on his back. These beatings intensified, particularly when he defied his grandfather by saving a good luck charm memento from his mother. The abuse worsened after his mother was banished from the family and later died in a car accident, ultimately driving Kaoru to leave the Hanabishi household in self-imposed exile, severing all ties.

As a university student in Tokyo, Kaoru lived independently but shadowed by loneliness and emotional isolation, masking his pain behind a facade of normalcy. He joined the photography club at Meiritsu University, forming friendships like that with Tina Foster, yet remained largely closed off about his past. His life shifted dramatically upon reuniting with Aoi Sakuraba, his childhood fiancée, whom he initially failed to recognize. Their families had arranged their marriage to unite their businesses, but the engagement was canceled after Kaoru left the Hanabishi. Aoi, having loved him since childhood, defied her family to find him. Despite initial reluctance to revisit his traumatic past, Kaoru accepted Aoi's devotion, and they rekindled their relationship.

To avoid scandal, Aoi's guardian, Miyabi Kagurazaki, arranged for them to live separately on the Sakuraba estate: Aoi as the landlady and Kaoru as a tenant in the adjacent servants' house. This setup evolved into a co-ed dormitory as more female friends moved in, including Tina, Taeko Minazuki, Mayu Miyuki, and Chika Minazuki. Kaoru maintained a secret romantic relationship with Aoi while navigating the complexities of living with multiple women who developed feelings for him. His unwavering loyalty to Aoi and courteous yet firm demeanor helped manage these tensions, though reminders of his past—such as wearing traditional Japanese clothing, which he avoided due to its Hanabishi association—could trigger bouts of anger or depression.

Kaoru confronted his trauma by revisiting the Hanabishi estate to face his ailing grandfather, finding him a broken man, which diminished his desire for retribution. His resolve was tested when his paternal half-brother, also named Kaoru Hanabishi, sought to forcibly marry Aoi to claim the Hanabishi Zaibatsu. With Miyabi's help, Kaoru rescued Aoi from confinement and publicly renounced his inheritance, acknowledging his half-brother as the rightful heir. This act dissolved familial obligations, allowing Kaoru and Aoi to marry. In the manga's conclusion, he adopted his mother's surname, Honjo. His physical scars, a constant reminder of his suffering, gradually faded, reflecting his emotional healing through Aoi's support.

Throughout the series, Kaoru evolved from a guarded, traumatized individual into a more open and resilient person, defined by his kindness, integrity, and devotion to Aoi.
