Description
Misaki Shimizu is a central character in the story and a hardworking 22-year-old woman known for her beauty, bright personality, and kindness. She works as a designer at a small company called Octopus, where she creates business cards, flyers, and other promotional materials. Beyond her main job, Misaki holds four additional part-time jobs to make ends meet, a necessity born from needing to repay debts left behind by her father. Her ultimate motivation is to save enough money to eventually open her own shop, and she dreams of taking her mother on a trip once the debts are fully paid. In her past, Misaki worked as a gravure idol under stage names such as Kawamura Miki and Yamakawa Tsubasa, and she also has a history of filming risqué videos, a chapter of her life she prefers to keep hidden.
Within the story, Misaki serves as a connection between the ordinary world and the violent underworld that the protagonist, Akira, is trying to leave behind. She becomes a coworker and friend to Akira after he begins working as a delivery person at Octopus, a job she helped him secure. Misaki is frequently caught in dangerous situations, often targeted by criminal elements because of her association with Akira and her own past. She is threatened and blackmailed by a yakuza member named Kojima, who attempts to force her into working as a call girl. Throughout the story, she faces multiple incidents including extortion, stalking, and attempted assault. Despite these troubles, she refuses to involve others, at one point considering asking Akira for help but holding back because she does not want to put him in further danger, mistakenly believing him to be a coward. Her key relationships include her bond with Akira, which develops from a chance encounter where she offered him a handkerchief, to a deep romantic connection. She also shares a workplace camaraderie with the president of Octopus, who supports her. The yakuza boss Ebihara watches over her from a distance, having decided that when she finally opens her shop, he will anonymously send her flowers.
Misaki undergoes significant development as she gradually learns the truth about Akira. After being rescued from an attacker by a masked individual, she does not initially realize her savior was Akira. Later, when she is drawn into a major conflict with a gangster named Yamaoka, she finally discovers that Akira is a professional killer, and she also recognizes him as the person who had previously saved her. Her acceptance of this truth is a crucial turning point. Following the resolution of this conflict, Akira confesses his love for her and proposes. Although they do not legally register their marriage, Misaki accepts his proposal and wears the ring he gives her. By the events of the sequel series The Fable: The Second Contact, she lives happily with Akira, and the two share a loving domestic life together. While Misaki possesses no special combat abilities or unique skills beyond her artistic talent and strong work ethic, her most notable traits are her resilience and her capacity for kindness, which remain intact despite the numerous hardships she endures.
