Description
Deshico is a palm civet and a character from the later arcs of Beastars. He is the founder and leader of an organization called Kopi Luwak, which operates out of a cafe.
In terms of appearance, Deshico is an adult, but he has an extremely youthful look. He is short and slight of build, which makes him resemble a pre-adolescent child. His fur is a short, honey-like color with brown tones on his back, ears, cheeks, and muzzle. He has large bronze-colored eyes, two pairs of whiskers, and a long, thick tail with a ringed pattern.
Deshico’s background is directly tied to his unique biology as a civet. Since childhood, he was teased because his species produces both a valuable rectal discharge used in perfumes and, through its digestive process, the indigestible coffee beans that become the expensive kopi luwak coffee. While he claims not to be ashamed of this ability, as it provides the funding for his organization, he is also deeply resentful of the ridicule he received. His primary motivation is to use the wealth generated by his body to research hybrid animals, seeking to accomplish meaningful deeds that do not involve his digestive tract, which he views as a way to escape the shame and mockery of his past.
Deshico generally displays a peaceful and cheerful disposition, coupled with a great deal of knowledge about the nature of both carnivores, herbivores, and hybrid beasts. However, there is an undercurrent of deep-seated resentment beneath his jovial surface. In terms of story role, Deshico serves as a crucial source of information. Legoshi, Louis, and the Shishigumi visit him seeking data on the hybrid villain Melon. He agrees to help, but in exchange, he forces the group to dig through a week’s worth of his excrement to harvest coffee beans for a shared drink. While they comply, he provides them with verbal insights into the psychology of hybrids. However, he also reveals that for carnivores who have tasted meat, his kopi luwak coffee acts as a stimulant that intensifies their craving for live prey, nearly causing the carnivores present to attack Louis.
Key relationships include his connection to the Shishigumi and Legoshi, whom he ultimately aids in their fight against Melon. He is also known to have sent his bat subordinates to secretly collect blood samples from a kindergarten for hybrid children to further his research, only to be thwarted by Gosha, the Komodo dragon. The anime adaptation gives Deshico a considerably more sinister role. In this version, his Kopi Luwak organization is also involved in drug trafficking and collaboration with Melon, motivated by a desire to spread chaos through society rather than pure academic inquiry.
As for notable abilities, Deshico’s primary power is his unique digestive system, which produces high-value commodities. This biological function has made him wealthy enough to fund a private research organization. Beyond his digestive traits, he possesses extensive knowledge regarding hybrid animals, their sensory anomalies, and their psychological profiles. He is also noted for his coffee-brewing skills, specifically the preparation of kopi luwak.
