Description
Pochitan is a fairy and a central figure in the narrative, serving as the companion to the main protagonists, Cure Answer and Cure Mystic. This character is specifically identified as a time-space fairy, possessing the rare and significant ability to travel across both time and space. Pochitan's arrival is the catalyst for the entire plot, as it appears in the bedroom of the main character, Anna Akechi, on her fourteenth birthday in the year 2027. Before it can fully explain its intentions, Pochitan inadvertently uses its power to transport Anna from her original time in 2027 back to the year 1999.
This journey through time, however, expends nearly all of Pochitan's energy. As a direct consequence, the fairy loses its original form and reverts to a powerless infant-like state. In this baby form, Pochitan is unable to speak in full sentences, communicating only in simple, childish sounds and single words. Its personality is described as pure, innocent, cheerful, and having a great love for fun and play, much like a human baby. One of its most notable simple pleasures is a fondness for drinking milk.
Despite its infantile appearance and demeanor, Pochitan retains its core instincts and purpose. It is able to sense when the Phantom Thieves are active and when a Makoto Jewel, the precious items they steal, is in danger. In these moments, it guides and urges Anna and her partner, Mikuru Kobayashi, to take action and help those in trouble. Its role in the story is thus twofold: it is both the reason the heroines are brought together and the emotional and spiritual heart that motivates them to fight. Pochitan is also directly tied to the heroines' ultimate goal. To return Anna to her original time in 2027, Pochitan must first collect enough Makoto Jewels to restore its own power and original form. The jewels are absorbed into Pochitan's body, providing it with the energy it needs to grow and, eventually, potentially enable another time jump.
In terms of abilities, beyond its primary power to travel through time, Pochitan demonstrates several other unique traits. It has the curious ability to store various objects inside its own body, a power that develops and becomes more apparent as it gains energy from the Makoto Jewels. In a crisis, Pochitan can also use its power defensively. For instance, it is shown using a burst of its own energy to fend off an attacking enemy, and it can enlarge its body to act as a cushion to protect its companions from a fall. It also sports a pair of small wings, allowing it to fly, and can even create straps to carry the Cures through the air. Its key relationships are with its two main partners, Anna and Mikuru, whom it lives with at the Cure Detective Agency. It also has a significant connection with the self-proclaimed genius inventor Jet Senpai, who recognizes Pochitan as a rare time-space fairy and helps the group understand its role in their mission. As the story progresses, each Makoto Jewel collected helps Pochitan regain its strength, leading to small signs of growth and the gradual unlocking of more of its latent abilities.
