Description
Keitarō Gentōga is a university student and the central figure in the supernatural narrative he navigates. He is characterized by a profound and often paralyzing fear of the paranormal, a fear rooted in a traumatic incident from his middle school years. During that time, his innate ability to attract ghosts resulted in a close friend being dragged into a spiritual encounter, leaving both him and his childhood friend, Eiko Hōzuki, cursed. This curse manifests as nerve endings that grow from his right hand, causing him persistent pain and guilt.

The trauma of inadvertently harming someone close to him led Keitarō to become a shut-in for two years, isolating himself to prevent anyone else from getting hurt due to his spiritual condition. He was eventually coaxed back into a normal life with the persistent support of Eiko and his family. As the story begins, he is taking steps to reintegrate into society by attending college and working as a private tutor. Despite this progress, he remains deeply anxious about making the same mistakes again, and he harbors a strong aversion to anything related to haunted places or the supernatural.

Keitarō's personality is that of a cowardly and cautious young man who panics easily in dangerous situations, especially when the people he cares about are at risk. He is frequently terrified by the enthusiasm for the occult displayed by his young student, Yayoi Hōzuki, who is also Eiko’s cousin. His initial reaction to Yayoi is one of fear and reluctance, as he immediately senses her intense spiritual nature. However, his underlying concern for others often overcomes his fear, pushing him to act to protect them. He is a university student who holds the top score on his entrance exam, leaving a strong impression of intelligence on his classmates.

His primary motivation shifts over the course of the story. Initially, he simply wishes to live a life free from curses and ghosts. However, after meeting Yayoi, he is presented with a potential way to lift the curse on his hand by using his spirit-attracting nature to gather powerful evil spirits. He eventually accepts this dangerous mission, not only for his own sake but also to protect Eiko and to help Yayoi in her quest to find her missing mother. This decision marks a turning point where his motivation evolves from simple self-preservation to actively confronting the supernatural to safeguard his loved ones.

Keitarō's role in the story is that of an unwilling participant who gradually becomes a crucial partner. While Yayoi possesses the knowledge, strategic mind, and ability to see and capture ghosts clearly, Keitarō serves as an unparalleled beacon for spirits. His unique constitution makes him a magnet for the paranormal, a quality that is both a curse and a necessity for their shared goal. He is not a fighter like Yayoi but rather a source of spiritual energy that ghosts find irresistible. His relationship with Eiko is deep and complex; she is his childhood friend who loves him and was instrumental in his rehabilitation, though her affection carries a darkly obsessive and protective edge. His relationship with Yayoi begins with fear and reluctance but develops into a bond of mutual trust and reliance, with Keitarō coming to see her as someone important he refuses to abandon.

Over time, Keitarō shows significant development. He begins to move past his trauma, setting goals to confront his fears and undo the curse. He transitions from a passive, terrified individual to someone who actively works alongside Yayoi to capture evil spirits, learning to read her intentions and prepare for the risks involved in their operations. He still experiences fear, but he finds the resolve to continue, driven by his growing desire to protect those he cares about.

Keitarō's most notable ability is not a form of exorcism but his extraordinarily strong spiritual constitution. He naturally produces an energy that is said to be close to that of a deity, which causes ghosts to become frenzied in their desire to consume it. His ability to sense spirits is also remarkably acute; unlike Yayoi, who primarily sees ghosts, Keitaro feels them with all five senses, allowing him to detect traces of spiritual presence that might otherwise be missed. This sensitivity, however, also means he is constantly aware of the supernatural world around him, contributing to his perpetual fear and anxiety. His right hand bears the physical mark of the curse, a nerve that periodically grows back even after being cut, serving as a constant reminder of his past trauma and his link to the spirit world.
