Description
Yayoi Hōzuki is a young elementary school student who serves as the central figure driving the narrative. Her life was irrevocably changed by a tragic car accident that claimed the lives of both of her parents. In the aftermath of this event, she possesses a unique physical trait known as polycoria, effectively having two pupils in each eye, which gives her irises a distinct, skull-like appearance. This condition, which manifested after the accident, allows her to perceive both the physical world and the spirit world with perfect clarity.
Her core motivation stems directly from the accident, as she witnessed the soul of her mother being abducted by a tremendously powerful evil spirit known as the Spectre of Death or Kuubou. Swearing to retrieve her mother, Yayoi has dedicated her young life to hunting and collecting dangerous ghosts. Her ultimate goal is to amass an army of spirits powerful enough to confront the entity that took her mother.
Yayoi possesses a personality that is as formidable as her mission. She is characterized by an unnerving calmness and a stoic, almost emotionless demeanor that can be unsettling to those around her. Despite her small stature and adorable appearance, she is a ruthless and highly efficient ghost hunter, showing no mercy to malevolent spirits. This "creepy good" nature means she is firmly on the side of protecting the living, but her methods are brutal and pragmatic. She operates on a clear moral compass; while she shows no hesitation in torturing or feeding evil ghosts to each other to increase their power, she displays compassion and kindness towards spirits who were victimized in life, helping them find peace. Her intelligence is exceptionally high, with an IQ reportedly over 160 as a result of the head trauma from the car accident, making her a child prodigy who can quickly analyze supernatural threats and devise complex strategies.
In the story, Yayoi is the leader and strategist of a ghost-hunting trio. Her role is to act as the knowledgeable expert who captures spirits and formulates the plans for each expedition. A key element of her methodology is her use of captured ghosts, which she seals inside various stuffed animals and dolls. To create her most powerful servants, known as Graduates, she employs a brutal tactic reminiscent of the Gu ritual, forcing the spirits in her collection to fight and consume each other until only the strongest remain. She uses these Graduates, along with other tools like a crowbar and sanctified ropes, to subdue and capture new, more dangerous ghosts.
Her key relationships are central to her development. She lives with the family of her paternal uncle and is deeply grateful for her adoption, not wanting to cause them trouble. Her primary partners in ghost hunting are her cousin, Eiko Hōzuki, and their college-age tutor, Keitaro Gentoga. Yayoi often uses Keitaro, who has a spiritual constitution that attracts ghosts, as bait to lure out spirits that would otherwise avoid her. While initially this seems cold and exploitative, a bond of trust forms between them. Yayoi, in her own way, becomes a protective leader who values her team's safety and morale, even putting her own mission on hold to rescue a friend. Over the course of her journey, her singular focus on revenge is tempered by these relationships, and she learns the value of cooperation and protecting her companions. Her notable abilities include her special polycoria eyes for seeing spirits, her genius-level intellect for tactical planning, and her proficiency in commanding and controlling a wide array of captured ghosts, ranging from common vengeful spirits to immensely powerful Graduates like the Black Asura of the Eclipse and the High Priest of the Evil Sutra.
