Description
Lassie Ichidō is the family dog of the Ichidō household and a recurring animal character in the High School! Kimengumi series. The dog originally wandered into the Ichidō home and, over time, was simply accepted as a pet without any formal decision to adopt him. He belongs to the protagonist Rei Ichidō and lives alongside Rei's father Takuseki and younger sister Kiri. Despite the feminine connotation of his name, which is derived from the famous cinematic collie Lassie and from a Scottish term for a young girl, Lassie Ichidō is a male dog. He is a mixed-breed dog with a Shiba Inu type appearance and was modeled after an ordinary street dog.
In terms of personality, Lassie Ichidō is far from a typical pet. He possesses a strong, often bizarre personality that matches the eccentric tone of the series. Unlike ordinary dogs, he frequently walks upright on his hind legs, giving him a humanlike and almost comedic presence. He can be very hot-tempered and is highly manipulative, often using his wits to get what he wants from both other dogs and humans. These traits make him a Funny Animal, a character who behaves more like a person than a real dog. His attitude and mannerisms closely resemble those of his owner Rei, reinforcing the idea that he is a canine reflection of the Kimengumi leader's own peculiar nature.
Lassie's motivations are simple and oriented around his own comfort and amusement. He does not drive the plot but instead reacts to the chaos of the Ichidō household in ways that generate additional humor. As a non-speaking animal character in a slapstick comedy, he does not pursue any deep personal goals beyond food, rest, and occasionally exerting his will over those around him.
His role in the story is primarily as a supporting comedic presence. He adds to the visual gags and absurd situations that define the series. As the pet of the main protagonist, he appears frequently in episodes that focus on the Ichidō family or on domestic settings. He contributes to the ongoing joke that even the family dog is just as strange as the rest of the cast.
In terms of key relationships, the most important is his bond with Rei Ichidō. The two share a close, almost mirrorlike dynamic, with Lassie acting as a four-legged extension of Rei's own oddball energy. He also interacts with the other Kimengumi members and with other animals in the series, including a dog named Pochi, who is voiced by Sayumi Suzushiro in the 2026 adaptation.
Lassie does not undergo any significant character development over the course of the series. As a gag character and a pet, his personality and behavior remain consistent throughout. His function is to provide reliable comedic relief rather than to evolve as a character.
Regarding notable abilities, Lassie can walk on two legs like a human, a skill that sets him apart from ordinary dogs and amplifies his anthropomorphic qualities. He is also intelligent enough to manipulate people and other animals, demonstrating a crafty side that goes beyond simple animal instinct. These abilities are used for comedy rather than for any practical or heroic purpose, making him a memorable part of the series' absurd world.
