Description
Seiji Date is one of the five central warriors from the anime Yoroi-Shinden Samurai Troopers, known as the bearer of the Korin armor, which represents the virtue of Rei, or courtesy. He was born on June 9, 1973, in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, as a descendant of the famous historical general Date Masamune. His family runs a kendo dojo, a tradition upheld by his strict grandfather, who was largely responsible for Seiji's upbringing and instilled in him the disciplines of a traditional bush i warrior. His father works in the police force, and his mother is second only to her father-in-law in the dojo's instruction. Seiji has two sisters: Yayoi, who is five years older and a talented kendo practitioner, and Satsuki, who is two years younger and less interested in martial arts. Growing up, Seiji's health was fragile, and as a superstition, his family briefly dressed him as a girl. His older sister Yayoi also enjoyed teasing him and using him as a subject for dress-up, experiences that contributed to a lasting discomfort around girls. Furthermore, his pale, sharp eyes often frightened other children, so Yayoi suggested he cover one eye with his hair, a style he maintained and which also served as a subtle homage to his one-eyed ancestor.
In terms of personality, Seiji is defined by his proper, formal demeanor and his adherence to a strict moral code. He speaks a very formal version of Japanese and holds a deep-seated hatred for lies and evil. He is often seen as the most composed and strategically minded member of the Troopers, preferring to analyze a situation and devise a plan before acting. However, this controlled exterior masks a powerful inner fire. When pushed to his limits, particularly by acts of cruelty or dishonor, Seiji can be driven into a nearly blind rage, which paradoxically unleashes tremendous power through his armor. Despite his formal upbringing, he has a rebellious streak that manifested in his youth as a dislike for excessive etiquette. His grandfather taught him the art of bonsai and the bamboo flute to cultivate restraint and calm his restless spirit. In his free time, Seiji enjoys these traditional arts, as well as repairing swords, cycling, and following F1 racing, even competing in races himself while underage.
Seiji received his yoroi, Korin, which draws power from light, after a pivotal kendo match during the summer of his second year of junior high school. His opponent, a notable practitioner named Kazamatsuri Shingo, cheated by throwing an object into Seiji's eye. In response, Seiji angrily broke a major kendo etiquette rule by knocking off Shingo's face protector and knocking him unconscious. No one else had witnessed the cheating, so Seiji's grandfather punished him by sending him to the basement. By accepting the blame, Seiji saved Shingo from a lifetime ban from kendo. In that basement, he discovered the ancestral Korin armor and proved he understood the concept of courtesy. Throughout the series, his role is that of a strategist and a precise, lethal swordsman. He often partners with Touma Hashiba for reconnaissance and planning, and he develops a strong protective instinct toward the leader, Ryo Sanada, frequently intervening to shield him in battle. His key relationships include a deep loyalty to his fellow Troopers, though he can clash with the more impulsive Shuu Rei Fuan. On the opposing side, he has a notable rivalry with the Dark Warlord Anubisu, whose darkness clashes with Seiji's light.
Seiji's character development is significant across the series and its sequels. Initially, he is somewhat distant and rigid, viewing his non-combatant allies like Nasuti and Jun as burdens. Through shared danger, he learns to respect their courage and begins to loosen his formal shell, treating them more as friends. He learns to balance his intense emotions with his rational mind, moving from explosive outbursts of rage to a more controlled and profound understanding of sacrifice and duty. This growth is severely tested in the Gaiden OVA, where he is captured in New York. A scientist and the evil spirit Shikaisen use drugs and torture to control him, forcing his Korin armor to commit murders. This traumatic event leaves him feeling that his armor, and by extension himself, has been irreparably soiled. This psychological scar continues into the Kikoutei Densetsu OVA, where he becomes hyper-sensitive to the armor's dark potential. By the time of the Message OVA, he has developed a more spiritual and philosophical understanding of the war, viewing it as a battle for the soul itself, and ultimately accepts the burden of his power to protect others.
As a warrior, Seiji is a master swordsman, having trained in kendo since he could hold a bokken. His signature weapon is the Korin Ken, a massive nodachi (a type of Japanese long sword) with a shuriken at its hilt, which he can wield with one or both hands. His most notable special attack is the Rai Ko Zan, or Lightning Cut. This technique manifests as either a ball of light energy thrown from his blade or a powerful, focused slash that can cut through enemies and break illusions. Beyond its offensive capabilities, the Korin armor grants him enhanced speed, strength, and agility, as well as the ability to see in the dark and emit blinding light. One of his most crucial abilities is the power to heal, using the armor's connection to light to mend wounds, as he once did by restoring Ryo's damaged eyesight. He also possesses a strong spiritual intuition, allowing him to sense auras, detect dark intentions, and perceive the truth behind deceptions.
