Description
Shu Layfang is one of the five original Samurai Troopers from the classic late-1980s anime series, who return in the sequel anime Yoroi-Shinden Samurai Troopers. Information about his life before becoming a Trooper, including his family history and how he was originally recruited, has not been documented in official media. He is known as Shu of the Hardrock, a title that reflects his role as the bearer of the Yoroi Gear of Earth, known as Kongo. His associated spiritual quality is the heart of Justice, which in this context is represented by the kanji Gi.
Shu Layfang is characterized by his immense physical strength and a straightforward, honest, and warm-hearted personality. In the sequel series, the character is shown to have aged, and his appearance now includes a turban. His voice actor, Tomohiro Nishimura, has made a playful, fourth-wall-breaking comment regarding this older design, humorously wondering if Shu’s hair is doing okay under the turban, suggesting that even in a more serious context, the character retains a relatable and slightly comedic essence. In battle, he is a powerhouse, relying on his formidable strength and his connection to the earth to protect his allies and crush his enemies.
Shu Layfang wields the powerful Kongo armor. His primary abilities are rooted in the element of earth, granting him immense defensive capabilities and raw, crushing physical power. As a member of the original generation of Troopers, he fights alongside his long-time comrades. He shares a particularly close bond with Ryo Sanada, the leader of the group, and is a trusted and integral part of the five-man team. The original Troopers, including Shu, appear in the new sequel to support the next generation of warriors, demonstrating their continued dedication to protecting the world from the forces of the Netherworld. In this new story, they return to aid the current Troopers when the situation becomes dire, showing that their sense of justice and camaraderie has not faded with time.
