Description
Emperor Hakuyō is the young ruler of the kingdom of Hakurou, a nation under the protection of the divine beast Byakko. At the beginning of the story, he is eighteen years old and is described as a beautiful person with silver hair and golden eyes. He is the son of a previous emperor who passed away suddenly, leaving the crown prince, Hakuyō’s half-brother, at just three years old. As a result, Hakuyō was chosen by the imperial family, the prime minister, and the generals to ascend the throne in place of the infant heir.

Before becoming emperor, Hakuyō was one of many princes with no powerful backing to support his claim to the throne. He chose an independent path early on by relinquishing his succession rights and becoming a common subject. Demonstrating remarkable talent, he took and passed both the civil and military recruitment exams, establishing a reputation as a genius. This background has made him an admired and capable leader. As emperor, he exercises his talents to make the country prosperous and has earned the absolute trust of his people. He is known for having a calm smile, an enchantingly sweet voice, and a polite demeanor towards everyone. While he possesses a strong sense of duty, he is not considered stern, and it is said he frequently jokes around with the officers in the governmental palace.

Hakuyō's central role in the narrative begins when he decides to experience a mock marriage meeting for himself. He appears before Kou Matsurika, a female officer of the Inner Palace, who had been asked to serve as a practice partner for what she believed was the son of a distinguished family. Rather than a typical romantic encounter, Hakuyō is intrigued by Matsurika's exceptional memory. His response to this interest is not to immediately bring her into his inner circle but to set a challenging condition. He tells her to go and pass the imperial civil examination first. This action reveals a key aspect of his personality: he seeks a partner who is not just a consort but an equal capable of standing by his side with recognized ability and intellect.

Hakuyō's motivations are tied to his role as a ruler who values competence. He is a charismatic and talented governor, admired for his skills in both literary arts and combat. His primary relationships in the story are with Matsurika, whom he challenges to grow, and his close aides. He is served by figures such as Hou Shisei, a genius who achieved the highest score on the civil examination, and Rei Tenga, who comes from a distinguished military family of Imperial Guard generals. These relationships help define his court and his expectations for those around him.

Throughout the series, Hakuyō acts as a catalyst for Matsurika's development. Instead of a traditional Cinderella story where the prince simply elevates the heroine, he creates a path for her to achieve status through her own efforts. This demonstrates his respect for the bureaucratic systems of his nation and his belief in meritocracy. While he is presented as the perfect embodiment of a young maiden’s ideal, his actions show a more complex personality that blends romantic interest with a practical and somewhat demanding vision for a partner.

Hakuyō's notable abilities stem from his earlier life as a scholar and a soldier. He is a genius who successfully passed both the civil and military examinations, which sets him apart as both intellectually gifted and physically capable. This combination of scholarly knowledge and martial skill informs his rule and his personal interactions, allowing him to engage with various aspects of his empire from a position of genuine understanding.
