Description
Kaguya, also known as Princess Kaguya, is a major antagonist in the series Yaiba: Samurai Legend, serving as the central figure of the second season known as the Kaguya Arc. Her character is loosely based on the princess from the Japanese folktale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.
Kaguya is the Empress of the Moon and the ruler of a race of anthropomorphic rabbit-like people who live there. Unlike her subjects, she appears as a beautiful human woman, often dressed in an outfit reminiscent of a Playboy bunny costume. Having lived for over a thousand years, she awakens from a long slumber after sensing the powerful energy radiating from the Dragon Orb possessed by the young samurai Yaiba Kurogane. Upon her awakening, she launches an invasion of Earth using bamboo-styled spaceships.
Kaguya's personality is that of a seductive and terrifying ruler, driven by ambition and a desire for power. As recalled by her voice actress, she was a frightening figure, which speaks to her menacing nature. Her primary motivation is to conquer the Earth and declare herself its queen, seeking to rule the planet forever. To maintain her youthful appearance and immense power, she must drain the essence of youth from young girls. She accomplishes this with a simple kiss, which saps the victim's energy and can cause them to age rapidly, recharging Kaguya for a time. This process defines her as having properties similar to a Gaki, a form of spiritual vampire.
In the story, Kaguya serves as the final antagonist, creating an intense three-way conflict between herself, Yaiba, and his rival Takeshi Onimaru. She makes her dramatic first appearance in the final episode of the first season, interrupting a decisive battle between Yaiba and Onimaru over the Pacific Ocean by emerging from a gigantic ship that appears in the sky.
A key part of Kaguya's background involves an ancient grudge. A thousand years before the story begins, she had already attempted to conquer the world but was defeated by the priest of the Dragon God. The priest defeated her by cutting off her ears and sealing them within the spirit of the Dragon Priestess, a power that has been passed down through generations of Dragon Priestesses. This history establishes her deep connection to the Dragon God and reveals that Sayaka Mine, a main character who travels with Yaiba, is the descendant of the legendary figures Taro Urashima and Princess Oto, making her the new Dragon Maiden and the key to unleashing Kaguya's true power. Kaguya seeks to absorb Sayaka's energy to return to her original, devastating form.
Kaguya is immensely powerful, possessing superhuman physical characteristics and longevity. She wields a small fan as a weapon and is capable of firing ki blasts strong enough to erase mountains from existence. Her abilities include the power to fuse and separate, possess other bodies, and absorb life force. Her true form is not her human appearance but that of a colossal, hydra-like monster with multiple heads, whose real face is located on its body. After absorbing enough energy, she can become large enough to fuse with the entire Earth, granting her control over the planet's elements and weather.
