Description
Kumo Otoko, whose name translates to Spider Man, is a character from the anime Yaiba: Samurai Legend. He is one of the original eight demons who once served the Fuujin oni. These demons were sealed in stone statues for a thousand years before being discovered and revived by the series' main antagonist, Takeshi Onimaru. As part of their revival, each demon was reincarnated into the body of an animal, with Kumo Otoko taking the form of a spider. This physical form defines his monstrous appearance and many of his inherent abilities.

Personality wise, Kumo Otoko is a notable contradiction. While he serves as a villain and a minion to Onimaru, he is not genuinely evil. He never displays any real ill-will or malice toward the protagonist Yaiba Kurogane and his friends, treating his opposition to them more as a matter of duty than personal hatred. His most defining characteristic is his profound, unwavering loyalty to his master, Onimaru. Despite being frequently mistreated, belittled, and sent on dangerous errands, his dedication never wavers. He prefers to use his intellect over brute strength, often devising complex plans and calculating probabilities, sometimes even using a calculator. However, his inherently goofy and bumbling nature means these elaborate schemes almost always backfire in a humorous way, making him a source of comic relief.

Kumo Otoko's primary motivation is simply to serve Onimaru to the best of his ability. He acts as his master's right-hand man, a position he holds not necessarily because of his competence but because there was no better option available at the time. He is constantly dispatched to carry out various tasks, such as recruiting new warriors for their cause or gathering intelligence on their enemies. His role in the story is that of a recurring antagonist and a loyal lieutenant. Among the eight revived demons, he is unique. While others are either slain in battle or eventually defect to Yaiba's side, Kumo Otoko remains loyal to Onimaru from beginning to end. He is the sole demon to support his master through every challenge, never once betraying him.

His most significant relationship is, without question, with Takeshi Onimaru. This bond is one of complete subservience. Even though Onimaru treats him poorly and rarely shows him any respect, Kumo Otoko never complains or considers abandonment. He also has a notable relationship with the protagonist group; despite being an enemy, he never fights with genuine malice, which keeps his character from being truly threatening. In one instance, during an attack on Earth by the Moon Princess Kaguya, Kumo Otoko temporarily sets aside his differences and works alongside Yaiba and his friends, further showing that his loyalty is more to Onimaru as a person than to the cause of evil itself.

Throughout the story, Kumo Otoko shows little personal development in terms of his alignment or personality; his steadfast loyalty remains his constant trait. He does, however, play a key role in the series' epilogue. After Onimaru is finally freed from the demonic influence of the Wind God and returns to being a normal human, the magic that sustained the eight demons fades from the world. As a result, Kumo Otoko loses his demonic intelligence and speech and permanently transforms into a normal, non-magical spider. In this final state, he lives out his days peacefully with two other transformed demons in the garden pond of the Mine family residence.

In terms of abilities, Kumo Otoko is a capable strategist, though his plans rarely succeed due to his clumsy execution. He is also a gifted mechanic and engineer, having designed and built several machines for Onimaru to use against his enemies. The most notable of these is the Mecha Tortoise Europa, a large vehicle he personally pilots. As a spider demon, he also possesses physical traits common to arachnids, such as a heightened sensitivity to vibrations, which can be used as a weakness against him. In the original Japanese version of the series, he speaks with a Kansai dialect, a linguistic quirk that adds to his distinctive, less intimidating character.
