Description
Takeshi Onimaru is a central figure in the Yaiba: Samurai Legend series, serving as the primary rival and antagonist to the protagonist, Yaiba Kurogane. His character undergoes a dramatic transformation, shifting from a serious human kendo practitioner to a power-hungry demon, and eventually finding redemption as an honorable rival.
Initially, Takeshi Onimaru is introduced as a stern and highly skilled high school kendo player who takes his training very seriously. He has no patience for jokes or frivolity, which makes him an immediate foil for the mischievous and impulsive Yaiba. This fundamental clash of personalities quickly turns them into bitter rivals. After suffering a humiliating defeat and enduring Yaiba’s pranks, Onimaru’s vengeful and easily angered nature drives him to seek greater power at any cost.
This quest for revenge leads him to the Fuujin-ken, or Sword of the Wind God, a legendary and cursed blade that is an heirloom of the Onimaru family. Upon wielding this sword, Takeshi becomes possessed by the spirit of Fuujin, which transforms him into a literal oni, or demon, fulfilling the meaning of his name. In this demonic form, his personality warps into something ruthless and megalomaniacal. He becomes obsessed with conquering Japan, establishing a flying fortress as his base of operations and using his newfound sorcery to amass an army of demons and brainwashed followers. He shows little forgiveness for failure among his minions, such as Kumo-Otoko and the Eight Demons, though he recognizes useful allies like the inventor Professor Kanabo.
Physically, his transformation is equally striking. As a human, Onimaru is tall with a thin frame and a bald head. As a demon, he becomes far more muscular and imposing, growing small horns on his forehead and donning a fearsome suit of elaborate armor adorned with a skull-shaped breastplate, spiked pauldrons, a red cloak, and sometimes a dragon-shaped helmet. Despite his evil turn, a sliver of his original honor remains, a trait that becomes more pronounced in the story's later arcs. After Yaiba cuts off his demonic horns, Onimaru is freed from Fuujin’s possession and reverts to his human form. He subsequently trains under Yaiba’s father, Kenjuro Kurogane, which tempers his ambition and hatred, allowing him to ultimately acknowledge Yaiba as a friendly rival rather than a hated enemy.
As the main antagonist, Onimaru’s role is to be the primary obstacle that Yaiba must overcome. His quest for power drives much of the series’ conflict, from his initial takeover of Japan to his later schemes involving legendary weapons. His key relationships are defined by this rivalry with Yaiba, but he also has significant interactions with his loyal demonic servants and, later, with Kenjuro as a mentor. One of his most notable developments is a temporary alliance with Yaiba to face a greater threat, demonstrating his capacity to put aside his personal ambitions to save the world.
Onimaru’s notable abilities are extensive and primarily derived from his demonic power and legendary swords. His primary weapon is the Fuujin-ken, which grants him control over wind, allowing him to fire energy blasts and create devastating tornadoes. His most powerful technique with this blade is the Tatsumaki Giri, a massive, drill-like tornado capable of piercing through a mountain. Later, he wields the Maou-ken, or Devil King Sword, an incredibly powerful evil blade that can channel the user's malice into destructive energy. Beyond swordsmanship, his demonic nature grants him various sorcerous abilities, including summoning an endless army of Black Oni from the ground, using necromancy to resurrect ancient warriors as beast-like demons, and hypnotizing people with a single glare. Even before his transformation, he was an exceptionally skilled kendo fighter, capable of defeating formidable opponents with a single strike.
