Description
Leonard Maxwell is a former member of the American Colony who plays a significant role as an antagonist before eventually allying with the Kingdom of Science. He is a tall, sinewy man with a gaunt face, deep cheekbones, and a severe expression. His most striking features are his large, narrow eyes, which have very small pupils shaped like a PPI radar display. He has a large hooked nose, thin lips, no eyebrows, and long, wiry black hair styled into dreadlocks that fan out from his face. His hairline accentuates the jagged lines of his petrification scar, which consists of two concentric circles on his forehead with symmetrical cracks radiating outward. After being revived, he loses these scars. His outfit includes a black, skin-tight short-sleeved shirt, black gloves, baggy black pants, a wide belt, a skirt with a zigzag hem, white mid-shin boots, oversized metal shoulder pads with tassels, and a zigzag metal collar, which is the standard attire for Stanley Snyder's squad.

Before the worldwide petrification event, Leonard was a military radar operator. This background defines his entire role in the story, as he is the primary operator of radar and communications equipment. His personality is serious, calm, and deeply dedicated to his job. He is a professional who carries out his duties with a cold and focused demeanor, tracking his targets with relentless precision. He answers questions bluntly, directly, and informatively, behaving as a trained soldier would. Despite this seemingly unshakeable façade, he can be caught off guard by the unexpected and ingenious tactics of the Kingdom of Science, occasionally raising his voice in alarm or failing to finish his sentences properly when surprised.

Leonard's primary motivation in the story is to fulfill his role as a member of Stanley's squad, using his expertise to hunt down Senku Ishigami and his friends. He operates the radar on the Perseus, the ship commandeered by the American Colony, and is instrumental in tracking the Kingdom of Science's movements across South America. He is not a front-line fighter; his value lies entirely in his technological and analytical skills. His key relationships are with his comrades in the American military, particularly with his leader, Stanley Snyder. He follows Stanley's orders without question and provides him with the crucial intelligence needed for their operations. On the opposing side, his skills put him in direct competition with Ukyo Saionji, who specializes in sonar. While Ukyo uses sound waves, Leonard masters electromagnetic waves through radar, making them two sides of the same scientific coin.

Leonard's role in the story is primarily as a supporting antagonist during the South America Arc. He is first seen manning the radar on the Perseus, where he dramatically pinpoints the location of the escaping Kingdom of Science members by throwing a dart onto a map. He tracks their ship with perfect accuracy and is shocked when they suddenly increase their speed using a sail. He notices when their signal splits into two and correctly follows the decoy toward the Panama Canal, demonstrating his keen eye. When the squad gives chase in an airplane, Leonard pilots the craft, though Senku sabotages the engine with sugar, causing a crash. Later, he flies Stanley over the Amazon jungle to track their targets. He is responsible for guarding the communications equipment during the battle in Araxá, a vital asset. However, when Kohaku, Tsukasa, and Hyoga attack, Kohaku catches Leonard off guard and destroys the communications, which was the enemy's true goal. Flustered by this failure, Leonard later stays behind to guard the hostages while the other soldiers charge into battle. He is momentarily speechless at the sight of the second worldwide petrification light, allowing Ukyo to free the captives, and is then easily taken out by Matsukaze and Ginro before being petrified once more.

Leonard's development occurs after this second petrification event. Years later, his statue is gathered by Suika, and he is eventually revived by Taiju to provide support in constructing Superalloy City. He and his former American comrades are updated on the alliance between Dr. Xeno and Senku to defeat the Why-man. He looks at the moon in awe with Maya and Charlotte, realizing that someone is there and that space travel is now their goal in the Stone World. He fully integrates into the Kingdom of Science, later using his radar skills to detect a threatening Morse code message sent by the Why-man and promptly informing Ukyo and Senku's group.

Leonard possesses several notable abilities and skills. His expertise in radar operation is unparalleled, allowing him to keep tabs on the Kingdom of Science's location twenty-four hours a day with one hundred percent accuracy. He can determine the exact location and distance of a signal without a map on the radar, almost picturing the objects in his own head. He also demonstrates basic piloting skills, capable of flying a plane to track targets. His marksmanship with darts is precise enough to pinpoint locations on a map. Furthermore, he possesses the mental resilience to withstand millennia of petrification. His main weaknesses are a lack of combat training, as he is easily overpowered when forced into a physical confrontation, and a susceptibility to being emotionally thrown off by the unpredictable strategies of the Kingdom of Science.
