Description
Masayoshi Kimura is a student in Class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High School. He is identified by attendance number E-9. Both of his parents work as police officers, and they instilled a strong sense of justice in the family, which directly influenced the naming of their children. His given name, written with characters that can be read as "Masayoshi," is unconventionally pronounced "Justice". He has a younger brother whose name is similarly pronounced "Brave". The teasing and embarrassment Kimura endured because of his unusual name caused his concentration to drop, which negatively impacted his academic performance and ultimately led to his placement in the disadvantaged Class 3-E.

In terms of personality, Kimura is generally laid-back, reserved, and somewhat shy, often keeping a low profile among his more flamboyant classmates. He is, however, one of the more proactive students when it comes to the central task of assassination, motivated by the large monetary reward. Despite his quiet demeanor, he is determined and actively participates in plans against their target. His deepest insecurity is his name; he experiences feelings of inferiority because of it and has even considered changing it legally. He strongly prefers to be called "Masayoshi" by his teacher and peers, a request that everyone respectfully accommodates. This sensitivity extends to medical environments, where the announcement of his full name causes him visible discomfort.

Kimura's primary motivation stems from the desire to improve his situation, both financially by claiming the reward for the assassination and personally by overcoming the burden of his name. His role in the story is often that of a key tactical asset due to his physical abilities. He is frequently utilized for missions requiring high mobility, such as acting as a decoy, delivering a final, fast attack, or being the lead runner in sports games. A significant portion of his character arc is explored in the "Name Time" chapter, where the class learns the true pronunciation of his name. During a mock assassination exercise using code names, his classmates' attempt to be considerate by giving him any other name fails, leading their teacher to assign him the code name "Justice". The teacher then counsels him, explaining that while changing his name is an option, he could instead embrace it; if he were to be the one to save the world by successfully completing the assassination, the name "Justice" would become a celebrated headline rather than a source of shame. This advice helps Kimura begin to reconcile with his identity, postponing any decision to change his name.

Kimura maintains several key relationships within the class. He shows respect for his teacher, who demonstrates understanding by using his preferred name and offering crucial life advice. He often forms a working pair with classmate Toka Yada for group assignments, though this partnership is described as habitual rather than based on any particular feelings. He is also noted to harbor unreciprocated romantic feelings for Hinano Kurahashi. His relationship with his parents is somewhat strained due to their stubborn insistence on his and his brother's unique names, showing no regret for the social difficulties these names have caused.

Throughout the series, Kimura shows notable development, primarily in his self-acceptance. He transforms from a student who is deeply ashamed of his name and wants to hide it to someone who learns to consider its potential power and postpones changing it. His academic performance also improves significantly after joining Class 3-E, rising from 133rd place in the first-term midterms to 43rd place in the second-term finals. In the epilogue, set seven years after the main events, it is revealed that Kimura has followed in his parents' footsteps and become a police officer, working for the Metropolitan Police Department, demonstrating that he has fully embraced his past and his name.

Kimura's most notable ability is his exceptional speed. He is recognized as the fastest runner in Class 3-E, capable of running the 100-meter dash in 11 seconds. This speed, a result of his previous membership in the track and field club, is a crucial component of his assassination style. He has high mobility and physical strength, with official statistics rating his mobility and characteristic skill as supreme. In addition to running, he has demonstrated proficient knifework, scoring jointly fourth in his class in knife training. He also ranked first in mobile assassination and stealth skills and fifth as a moving sniper in final exams. In the anime film, he appears as part of the ensemble cast, maintaining his established traits without any film-exclusive storylines.
