Description
Suguru Geto is a central antagonist in the Jujutsu Kaisen narrative, whose life and death cast a long shadow over the series' events. He was originally a student at Tokyo Jujutsu High, where he was recognized as a Special Grade sorcerer and was considered one of the most powerful individuals of his generation, alongside his best friend, Satoru Gojo. During his time as a student, Geto was known for his kind and admirable personality, often serving as a thoughtful and responsible counterpart to the more brash Gojo. He firmly believed that the duty of jujutsu sorcerers was to protect the weak, non-sorcerer population from the cursed spirits they were not able to see. However, a series of traumatic events caused a profound and tragic shift in his worldview.
The turning point for Geto came during a mission to protect a young girl named Riko Amanai, the Star Plasma Vessel. Riko was killed by an assassin named Toji Fushiguro right in front of Geto. The subsequent celebration of her death by the non-sorcerer religious group that had hired the assassin deeply disturbed him. This event caused Geto to begin questioning his life's purpose. A later conversation with a fellow Special Grade sorcerer, Yuki Tsukumo, planted a dangerous seed in his mind: the idea that the only way to truly eliminate cursed spirits, which are born from negative human emotions, would be to eliminate all non-sorcerers. The final straw was witnessing the horrific abuse and imprisonment of two young girls, Mimiko and Nanako, by non-sorcerer villagers who blamed them for attracting curses. In a moment of decisive, radical change, Geto massacred all 112 villagers, adopted the two girls, and fully embraced his new ideology. He defected from Jujutsu High, becoming a curse user who called non-sorcerers "monkeys" and dedicated himself to creating a world populated only by jujutsu sorcerers.
As an adult, Geto took control of a religious organization and dressed as a Buddhist priest, a twisted reflection of his perceived role in guiding the world toward his new vision. He maintained a calm, charismatic, and deceptively gentle demeanor, which he used to manipulate vulnerable people while secretly gathering curses and funds for his plan. While he held a genocidal hatred for non-sorcerers, Geto was consistently friendly and loyal to other curse users and sorcerers, viewing them as his true family. His primary role in the story's timeline is as the main antagonist of the prequel, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, where he orchestrates the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, a large-scale attack on Shinjuku and Kyoto, in order to capture the powerful cursed spirit, Rika Orimoto, from the young prodigy Yuta Okkotsu. After a fierce battle, Geto is defeated by Yuta and subsequently killed by his former best friend, Satoru Gojo, who had been unable to stop his descent into darkness.
The most significant relationship in Geto's life was with Satoru Gojo. They were inseparable partners who pushed each other to be the strongest, and their friendship was so deep that Gojo could not bring himself to kill Geto when he first defected. Geto's fall from grace is a primary motivating factor for Gojo's own character development. Following Geto's death, his body is not cremated and is later taken over and controlled by an ancient sorcerer named Kenjaku, who uses Geto's identity and his powerful Cursed Spirit Manipulation technique for his own millennium-spanning plans. This body, marked by stitches on the forehead, appears in the main Jujutsu Kaisen series as a major antagonist, but it is not the original Suguru Geto.
Geto's development is a classic tragic fall, transforming from an idealistic hero into a genocidal villain driven by a twisted sense of justice. His motivations stem from deep psychological trauma and a logical, if horrifying, conclusion he reached after witnessing the worst of humanity. He did not desire power for its own sake, but rather a complete restructuring of the world, believing that his actions would create a better, more peaceful place for sorcerers.
Geto's notable abilities stem from his inherited technique, Cursed Spirit Manipulation. This technique allows him to exorcise and then absorb cursed spirits, condensing them into small, foul-tasting black orbs that he must swallow. Once absorbed, he can summon and control these spirits at will, with seemingly no limit to the number he can store. By the time of his death, he had amassed thousands of curses. His most powerful attack, Maximum Uzumaki, combines all the curses in his possession into a single, devastating blast of condensed cursed energy. Beyond his technique, Geto was also a highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant and possessed immense physical strength, making him a formidable opponent even without his cursed spirits.
