Description
Kento Nanami is a Grade 1 Jujutsu Sorcerer and a graduate of Tokyo Jujutsu High, where he was a year behind the immensely powerful Satoru Gojo. Standing at approximately 184 centimeters tall with a well-built frame, Nanami cuts a distinctive figure with his neatly styled blonde hair, parted at a precise seven-to-three ratio, and a pair of frameless goggles that shield his eyes. Rather than traditional sorcerer attire, he almost always wears a beige business suit over a blue shirt with a spotted yellow tie, an ensemble that reflects his pragmatic and professional approach to the supernatural world. His primary weapon is a blunt, cleaver-like sword wrapped in cloth, a tool whose lack of an edge emphasizes that his true power comes from his cursed technique rather than the blade itself.

Nanami’s journey as a sorcerer is defined by a deep disillusionment born from tragedy. During his school days, he was close friends with his classmate, Yu Haibara, an optimistic young man whose death during a mission that was misclassified as less dangerous than it truly was left a permanent scar on Nanami. The loss shattered his faith in the profession, leading him to view jujutsu sorcerers as people forced into a system that demands senseless sacrifice. Upon graduating, he abandoned the world of curses entirely to become a salaryman at a securities firm, seeking a normal, structured life. For four years, he worked a soul-crushing corporate job, making money for the wealthy and finding the experience just as meaningless, referring to both professions as fundamentally flawed. The turning point came when he finally acknowledged a small, low-grade curse attached to the shoulder of a young woman at a bakery he frequented. After he exorcised it, her simple, heartfelt gratitude gave him a sense of purpose he had never found in an office. He concluded that if he was going to suffer through work either way, he would choose the path where his suffering could have a tangible, positive impact on others, leading him to return to life as a sorcerer.

In terms of personality, Nanami is the archetypal "adult" in a world of chaotic and powerful individuals. He is calm, stoic, and exceptionally rational, often appearing serious and easily irritated by inefficiency or foolishness. He believes that adulthood is an accumulation of small despairs and is fiercely protective of young people, insisting that it is not a sin to be a child and that the burdens of the adult world should not be forced onto them. This protective nature defines his role as a mentor to Yuji Itadori. Initially, Nanami refuses to acknowledge Yuji as a proper sorcerer, viewing him as just a child, but as they fight together, he comes to respect the boy's determination and ability, eventually trusting him completely. His relationship with his senior, Satoru Gojo, is one of mutual trust but not respect; he finds Gojo's frivolous personality difficult to tolerate, though he acknowledges his immense power and reliability. Other sorcerers like Takuma Ino look up to him immensely, and receiving a recommendation from Nanami is considered a great honor.

Nanami's combat style is a direct extension of his personality: methodical, precise, and brutally efficient. His innate technique is the Ratio Technique, which allows him to divide the length of any target into ten equal sections, forcibly creating a weak point at the seven-to-three ratio. Striking this exact point guarantees a critical hit that largely ignores the opponent's natural durability, allowing him to inflict devastating damage on curses far stronger than himself. He can apply this technique not only to an enemy's entire body but also to specific parts like an arm or a head, and even to inanimate objects. An extension of this ability is Collapse, where he strikes the ratio point on a wall or pillar, causing the structure to shatter and weaponizing the resulting rubble as a large-scale attack.

To further enhance his abilities, Nanami employs a self-imposed Binding Vow he refers to as Overtime. During regular working hours, he limits his cursed energy output to around eighty or ninety percent. However, once his self-defined workday ends, typically after 6:00 PM, he removes this restriction, unleashing his full power. This state is often signaled by him wrapping his tie around his fist, signifying he is now working overtime and will fight with everything he has. Nanami is also legendary for his mastery of the Black Flash, a distortion in space that occurs when cursed energy is applied within a millionth of a second of a physical strike, raising the attack's power to the power of two point five. Before the series' protagonist, Yuji Itadori, surpassed him, Nanami held the record for the most consecutive Black Flashes, having landed four in a row, a feat that speaks to his incredible focus and combat rhythm.

Throughout the story, Nanami serves as a crucial grounding force and mentor, particularly during the Vs. Mahito Arc, where he guides Yuji through a series of horrific encounters with the inhuman curse, Mahito. His role culminates during the Shibuya Incident, a catastrophic event where he fights tirelessly against multiple special-grade curses. After being severely burned by the disaster curse Jogo and losing an eye, he continues to protect civilians and fight for survival. In his final moments, grievously wounded and exhausted, he encounters Mahito once more. Unable to defend himself, he is killed by the curse's idle transfiguration. His last vision is of a peaceful beach vacation he always dreamed of, and his final words to Yuji, "You've got it from here," pass the torch of responsibility to the next generation, cementing his legacy as a dedicated, tired, and profoundly human hero who simply did his job until the very end.
