Description
Ash serves as a human male ARKS operative within the Oracle fleet. His early life is largely unknown, though he remembers being raised in an orphanage on Ship 74. Selective amnesia obscures a significant portion of his past, specifically erasing events from ten years prior to AP 238, the year he joined ARKS. This memory loss is accompanied by recurring dreams, including one where he appears as a young boy pleading with a woman in a lab coat. These dreams often feature visions of individuals he has not yet encountered.
Assigned to the Oribe Unit during his first training mission to Planet Naverius, Ash survived a devastating falspawn ambush that inflicted heavy casualties, saved only by operatives Zeno and Echo alongside fellow cadet Afin. Shortly after, Ash witnessed a bright light near a large tree on Naverius and discovered a girl named Matoi descending from the sky. Matoi pleaded with Ash to kill her. This encounter was followed by an attack from a masked man intent on killing both Matoi and Ash, repelled by Zeno and Gettemhult. Returning Matoi to the ARKS medical facility, Ash received a cryptic message from a being named Xion expressing confidence in his potential.
Ash's early missions involved returning to Naverius with Afin, Matoi, and their commander Kohana to combat resurgent falspawn. During one mission, Kohana absorbed excessive F-Factor, leading to a berserk state and her disappearance. Ash later discovered her mutilated body, correctly deducing from the clean blade wound that her death resulted from deliberate assassination. This incident, coupled with Control's refusal to recall the team despite Kohana's death, deepened Ash's distrust of ARKS command.
Throughout his journey, Ash encountered members of the Council of Six and learned of their conflict with entities known as Dark Falz. He confronted multiple incarnations, including Elder and Luther. During these conflicts, Ash uncovered more about his fragmented past. Through interactions with figures like Xiao, he learned that data related to Matoi and a critical incident from ten years prior had been erased from Xion's memories. This revelation prompted Ash to journey against the time stream, witnessing the fate of Klariskrays the Second and gaining further clarity about his origins.
Ash's quest culminated in confronting the masked assailant who had targeted Matoi, revealing the assailant's true identity and its connection to both Matoi's fate and Ash's forgotten history. Trapped within the entity Gemini, Ash encountered the fallen Luther, who disclosed the truth behind Ash's memory void. This led to a final confrontation with the revived Profound Darkness, where Ash united the entirety of ARKS in a desperate effort to save Matoi after her transformation into this entity, his resolve centered on fulfilling what he perceived as the reason for his existence.
Personality-wise, Ash is characterized by few words and inherent mystery, tending toward cryptic responses or silence unless he trusts someone. Once trust is established, he demonstrates fierce loyalty and protective instincts, particularly toward allies like Afin and Matoi. His weapon of choice is the Coated Edge.
His design is based on the default male human hunter from Phantasy Star Online 2's key artwork. The name "Ash" pays homage to Ash Canaan, a separate character from Phantasy Star Online, though the two are unrelated. Over time, the name "Ash" became a recurring placeholder for test characters in the Phantasy Star series.
