Description
Pochita is the Chainsaw Devil, a powerful devil who embodies the fear of chainsaws. Before the events of the story, he resided in Hell, where he was known by two contrasting titles: the Hero of Hell and the Devil that Devils fear the most. This reputation stemmed from his unique and terrifying ability to permanently erase other devils and the concepts they represent by consuming them. When Pochita devoured a devil, that devil could not reincarnate, and the fear that gave it power vanished from human memory, effectively rewriting reality. Among the concepts he erased were World War II, nuclear weapons, the Nazis, and a deadly virus known as AIDS, all of which no longer exist in the world of Chainsaw Man. This power made him an existential threat to all devilkind and the target of the most powerful devils in existence, including the Primal Fears like the Darkness Devil and the Four Horsemen.

A catastrophic battle against the Four Horsemen and the Weapon Devils left Pochita mortally wounded and in a near-death state, reducing him to a small, dog-like creature with a chainsaw blade protruding from his head and a pull-cord for a tail. In this weakened form, he escaped to Earth. There, he was found by a young, impoverished boy named Denji at his father's grave. Instead of fearing him, Denji offered his own blood to save the injured devil, forging a bond of partnership in exchange for Pochita's help in hunting devils to pay off Denji's yakuza debts.

Pochita became Denji's sole companion and emotional anchor in a life of extreme poverty and exploitation. Unlike most devils, who are inherently selfish and cunning, Pochita displayed profound empathy and loyalty, communicating through barks and whines like an actual dog. He cherished listening to Denji's simple dreams of a normal life, such as eating toast with jam and having a girlfriend. When Denji was later betrayed and brutally killed by the yakuza, Pochita made a selfless sacrifice. He merged his body with Denji's corpse, becoming his heart to revive him as a human-devil hybrid. Their contract was simple: Pochita would sustain Denji's life in exchange for being allowed to continue witnessing Denji's dreams.

In this new form, Pochita lives within Denji. Pulling the cord on Denji's chest allows him to transform into the Chainsaw Man, a hybrid state where he wields chainsaws from his head and arms. Pochita can communicate telepathically with Denji, often appearing in his dreams to offer warnings or guidance, such as telling him never to open a certain ominous door in his mind. While in this state, his power is limited compared to his original form, but his influence is still felt, as many devils recognize the Chainsaw Man's signature and note that Denji seems much weaker than the fearsome devil he once was.

Pochita's original devil form is a towering, humanoid figure with four chainsaw-armed limbs, a chainsaw for a head, and dark, armored scales, with his intestines trailing behind him like a scarf. In this form, his power is nearly unmatched. He possesses immense strength, speed that surpasses devil perception, incredible durability that allows him to survive atmospheric re-entry, and powerful regeneration that can rebuild his body from just his heart. He can also detach and use the chains from his arms for grappling, mobility, and attacking.

Despite his fearsome power, Pochita's personality remains empathetic and oddly heroic. He is known to respond to the cries of both humans and devils, helping those in need. His core desire is for simple connection, like a hug, but his destructive power made this impossible, often leading to the accidental deaths of those he tried to comfort. When he temporarily reverted to his true form after Makima psychologically broke Denji, he mimicked Denji's personality to deceive his enemies and protected innocent humans like Kobeni. His moral compass is distinct; when Makima proposed using his power to erase what she saw as "bad" concepts, Pochita rejected her vision, recognizing that his selective erasures were for humanity's benefit, not for creating a utopia under her control.

Key relationships define his role. His bond with Denji is the heart of the story, demonstrating that a devil is capable of genuine love and self-sacrifice. Makima, the Control Devil, is obsessed with him, seeing his power as the ultimate tool to reshape the world, and she masterminded the events of the first part of the story to break his contract with Denji and bring him back. Yoru, the War Devil, seeks revenge against him for consuming parts of her and devils like the Nuclear Weapons Devil. Later, when Denji's new family is destroyed, Pochita resurfaces to fight against the Chainsaw Man Church, showcasing his feral protectiveness. He strategically uses his power not just for destruction but for emotional support, such as regurgitating devils to restore Denji's lost memories and will to live.

Pochita's development throughout the story is tied to his changing state. He goes from a legendary, feared entity in Hell, to a weakened but loyal pet and partner to Denji, to a life-giving heart within him, and finally to a fully manifested devil again who must choose his own path. His most notable ability remains the power to erase devils and their concepts from existence by consuming them, a power that makes him the ultimate wild card in the cosmic conflicts between devils. His existence redefines the relationship between devils and humans, proving that fear can be interwoven with profound compassion and loyalty.
