Description
Fumio Matsubara is a supporting character in the Second Round of the Liar Game Tournament. He is an elderly man with short white hair and glasses, typically dressed in a smart shirt and pants. His appearance is harmless and unassuming, which belies a more cunning side to his nature.

Personality wise, Matsubara is portrayed as a friendly and talkative individual. Despite his genial demeanor, he holds very traditional values, a trait highlighted by his reaction to falling into debt, where he considered suicide as a way out. This traditional thinking contrasts with his ability to be deceitful when necessary, as he successfully stole money from his opponent in the first round of the tournament. He is not a major strategist but is cooperative and willing to follow the plans of others.

Matsubara enters the story as contestant number four in the Minority Rule game. He is one of the six contestants who ultimately joins Nao Kanzaki’s group. When Akiyama Shinichi devises a plan to form a team to survive the game, Nao specifically gathers a group comprising all the female participants and the only elderly male, which is Matsubara. This decision is made to avoid including a young male player suspected of being a cheater known as Mr. X. Matsubara’s primary role is as a reliable member of this alliance, following the team's strategy to split votes evenly between "Yes" and "No" each round. He successfully survives the first round of voting alongside Nao, Akiyama, and another teammate, Hitomi Miyahara.

Throughout the Second Round, Matsubara’s key relationship is with Nao Kanzaki, as he is a member of the alliance she forms. His interactions are limited to the group dynamic, where he serves as a cooperative participant in Akiyama’s complex strategies. He does not have significant independent relationships with antagonists or other major figures in the tournament.

Matsubara does not undergo significant character development within the story. He remains a consistent supporting figure whose traditional values and friendly exterior are established upon his introduction. His abilities are not extraordinary, but he demonstrates a practical cunning. He is capable of deceit, having stolen money in a previous round, and is able to follow intricate plans within the high-pressure environment of the Liar Game.
