Description
Kyubey, also known as the Incubator, is a central figure in Puella Magi Madoka Magica. At first glance, he appears as a small, cat-like, white creature with long ears that resemble rabbit or fox features, a pair of red-pink oval-shaped marks on his back, and a perpetually unchanging, almost smiling expression. This deceptively cute appearance belies his true nature as an extraterrestrial being whose actions drive the entire plot of the series.

His personality is defined by a complete and utter lack of human emotion. Kyubey does not experience feelings such as empathy, compassion, guilt, or sadness. He operates on a purely logical and utilitarian basis, viewing all actions and consequences through the lens of cost-benefit analysis. This absence of emotion makes him profoundly alien and unsettling, as he can describe horrific outcomes with the same cheerful and detached tone he uses for mundane observations. Because he lacks a moral compass as humans understand it, he does not believe his actions are evil; they are simply necessary and efficient.

The core motivation of Kyubey and his hive-minded race, the Incubators, is to counter entropy and prevent the heat death of the universe. They have developed a technology that converts emotions into energy. After evaluating countless species across the cosmos, they determined that human females, particularly those in adolescence, generate the most potent emotional energy. This energy reaches its peak when a girl with magical potential transforms from a state of hope to one of absolute despair. Kyubey's goal is therefore to facilitate this process as efficiently as possible, seeing humanity as a resource similar to livestock.

In the story, Kyubey serves as the catalyst for all events. He approaches young girls, offering to grant them any single wish in exchange for forming a contract to become a magical girl. What he does not fully disclose is that the contract involves extracting the girl's soul and sealing it into a gem called a Soul Gem, which allows her body to function as a puppet. Furthermore, he hides the truth that every magical girl is fated to eventually become a Witch, a being born of despair that spreads curses and destruction. The energy released during this transformation is the very product the Incubators harvest. His primary role is to manipulate the girls into forming contracts, often by omitting crucial information or presenting facts in a misleading way, while insisting that he has never told a lie.

Kyubey's key relationships are strictly transactional. He shows persistent interest in the protagonist, Madoka Kaname, because her latent magical potential is astronomically high due to a unique temporal circumstance, making her a perfect energy source. He interacts with Homura Akemi with a cold pragmatism, viewing her repeated time-leaping as a useful tool that has amplified Madoka's potential. His relationship with other magical girls like Mami Tomoe, Sayaka Miki, and Kyoko Sakura is purely functional; he is a means to an end, and he discards them without a second thought once they are no longer useful or have transformed into Witches.

While Kyubey himself does not undergo emotional development, his role evolves as the truth of his system is revealed. He remains a constant and unyielding force, representing the cold, logical machinery of the universe. However, his plans are ultimately subverted in the series' climax, and in the sequel film, The Rebellion Story, he attempts to manipulate and seize control of a newly established cosmic law. This attempt backfires spectacularly, leading to a final state where he is forced to experience the very emotions and curses he once exploited, a fate that leaves him broken and traumatized.

Kyubey possesses a wide array of notable abilities. He is a member of a collective hive mind, with numerous identical bodies existing simultaneously; if one body is destroyed, another can immediately take its place, and he may even consume his own remains to recycle energy. He is selectively invisible, only able to be seen and heard by girls who have magical potential or are already magical girls, communicating with them telepathically. His primary power is the ability to grant a single wish to a chosen girl, no matter how reality-altering it may be, with the scope limited by the girl's karmic potential. He then extracts the girl's soul to create a Soul Gem, which serves as the source of a magical girl's power. He can also collect Grief Seeds, the remains of defeated Witches, and is capable of teleportation, allowing him to appear and disappear in impossible ways and traverse great distances instantly.
