Description
Otome Ryūga is a pivotal antagonist in the 2023 film Kitarō Tanjō: Gegege no Nazo and its extended cut, Shinsei-ban. She is a high-ranking member of the Ryūga family, a powerful and corrupt clan that controls the remote village of Nagura, the film's primary setting. While the family is led by men in name, Otome operates as the shadow head of the family, pulling the strings from behind the scenes with a calm and calculating demeanor. She presents a composed and polite exterior but is ruthlessly pragmatic and views nearly everyone around her as a resource or obstacle rather than a person.

Otome's primary motivation is the advancement of Japan's power and the securing of her family's influence, which she believes justifies any atrocity. She is the mastermind behind the development of the mysterious "M" drug, a serum intended to grant immortality. To create it, she orchestrates the capture and exploitation of Ghost Tribe yōkai, including the wife of Kitarō's father, draining their blood for its supernatural properties. Her vision for the drug extends beyond personal gain; she hopes to use it to enable Japan's world domination. In her quest for control, she also plans for the young heirs of the family, Tokiya and Sayo, to serve as a "baby factory" to produce a suitable successor, treating human life with the same cold utility as she does yōkai.

In the story, Otome functions as one of the primary antagonists, though the full scope of the conspiracy is eventually revealed to have multiple layers. Her role places her in direct opposition to the film's protagonists, the war veteran Mizuki and the yōkai Gegerō (Kitarō's father). After Gegerō is imprisoned on false murder charges, Otome confronts Mizuki and casually reveals her entire evil plan, demonstrating her arrogance and belief that she is untouchable. She offers to spare Mizuki's life if he simply leaves and forgets what he has seen. Her key relationships are defined by manipulation and power. She is the mother of the sickly and kind-hearted Tokiya, but she shows him no maternal affection, seeing him only as a tool for breeding an heir. Her relationship with her daughter-in-law, Sayo Ryūga, is even more transactional, as she plans to confine Sayo to the village for the sole purpose of producing children.

Otome's character development is brief but dramatic, leading to a swift and brutal end. Her complete control is shattered when she is confronted by Sayo, who reveals herself to be the true killer behind the series of mysterious deaths in the village. In a shocking reversal of power, Sayo effortlessly overpowers Otome, who is killed as part of Sayo's revenge for being reduced to a mere vessel for the family line. This death underscores the film's themes of exploited people rising against their oppressors. Otome does not possess overt supernatural abilities; her power lies entirely in her political cunning, her ruthlessness, and her ability to command both human subordinates and yōkai forces to do her bidding. Her primary weapon is manipulation, and she is undone when faced with someone whose rage is more direct and personal than her own calculated cruelty.
