Description
Unmei Sasanami is the protagonist of the anime "Gekijōban Inazuma Eleven: Aratanaru Eiyū-tachi no Joshō" and serves as the assistant manager of the Nagumohara Middle School soccer team. He is a first-year student who stands out from previous series leads due to his dark and complex demeanor.

As a child, Unmei was passionate about soccer and played actively. However, at the age of seven, he collapsed during a match due to an undiagnosed congenital heart defect. The diagnosis forced him to give up playing the sport to avoid any strenuous physical activity, a loss that devastated him. He desperately researched ways to cure his condition and return to the field, but was ultimately unable to find a solution. This traumatic experience led him to distance himself from soccer entirely, choosing to enroll at Nagumohara Middle School precisely because it had abolished its soccer club five years prior. His initial wish is that soccer would disappear, reflecting his deep-seated pain and resentment toward the sport he once loved.

Despite his soft and somewhat dark appearance, Unmei possesses a bold and calculating personality. He is cold, sharp, and analytical, with a keen intellect that allows him to read people and situations with pinpoint accuracy, a trait that can mildly unsettle those around him. He is not afraid to stand up for himself or others, even confronting larger and more intimidating figures like the baseball club captain, Suruga Yagyu. While he starts the story trying to avoid soccer, he is incredibly passionate about the game when he finally allows himself to re-engage with it, using his tactical mind to formulate strategies and training regimens for his team. He has a tendency to throw himself into challenges, such as when he challenges the baseball club to a match after witnessing them disrespecting the sport.

Unmei's role in the story is unique as the first protagonist in the Inazuma Eleven series who cannot actually play soccer himself. Instead, he serves as the team's manager and strategist, a position that creator Akihiro Hino has compared to a brilliant tactician supporting talented players on the field. His core motivation is to confront his trauma and rekindle his love for the sport by helping others achieve what he cannot. His journey involves bringing together a team of underdogs at Nagumohara and leading them to challenge the standing champion, Raimon. He is driven by a desire to prove that his strategic mind can make a difference, and he hopes to one day be able to proudly say that he loves soccer.

Key relationships are central to his development. He has a significant connection with Joji Sakurazaki, a former soccer prodigy who has also turned away from the sport due to his father's controlling influence. Unmei becomes determined to push Sakurazaki back onto the field, seeing in him the ability to play that he himself has lost. He tells Sakurazaki that he will not forgive him for acting indifferent to his own talent. He also shares a pivotal relationship with Haru Endo, the son of original series protagonist Mamoru Endo, with their contrasting philosophies of genius versus strategy forming a core conflict of the story. Other important figures include his classmate Heita Kisoji, who shows him around town, and the antagonistic Suruga Yagyu, who despises soccer and leads the baseball team that mocks the sport.

Throughout the story, Unmei undergoes significant development. He begins as a bitter and withdrawn young man who tries to suppress his love for soccer to protect himself from further pain. His decision to finally face the sport again is a major turning point, and as he helps build the Nagumohara team, his cold exterior begins to crack, revealing the passionate and caring individual beneath. His journey is one of acceptance and learning to find a new way to be part of the world he was forced to leave behind.

Unmei's notable abilities lie entirely in his mental faculties. He has a sharp and analytical brain, capable of instantly remembering anything he has seen once. He is a brilliant tactician who can devise effective strategies to exploit opponents' weaknesses. As a manager, he plays a practical role in helping players demonstrate their talents and advises on effective points of play. His power is not in kicking a ball, but in his ability to move the entire team from the sidelines, believing in the incalculable enthusiasm and potential of his players.
