Description
Memenpu is the nine-year-old daughter of Gagumber and one of the two central characters in the anime Sakugan. She is a certified genius, having already graduated from college and earned seven doctorates at an age when most children are just beginning their formal education. Her intellect is a defining trait that shapes nearly every aspect of her life, from her hobbies to her relationships. She has a strong passion for mechanics and invention, spending her free time modifying and building machines to assist in the dangerous work of exploring the labyrinthine underground colonies where she lives.

Despite her academic achievements, Memenpu is very much a child at heart, driven by an intense curiosity and an almost boundless sense of adventure. For a long time, she has been haunted by vivid dreams of a towering structure on the surface, a place with an open sky, something entirely foreign to her subterranean existence. This vision becomes her greatest motivation. She becomes determined to become a Marker, a professional explorer who navigates the dangerous and uncharted territories of the labyrinth, in order to find this mysterious location and uncover the truth behind her dreams. This ambition puts her in direct, often comedic, conflict with her father, Gagumber, who is a seasoned Worker (a miner) and is fiercely overprotective. Where Memenpu sees a grand adventure, he sees countless lethal risks, and she often views his caution as the fussing of a bumbling deadbeat.

Her personality is characterized by a powerful, and sometimes reckless, overconfidence. Having been recognized as the smartest person in any room for her entire life, she has developed a strong belief in her own plans and abilities, occasionally to a fault. In the early stages of her journey, this manifests as a tendency to dive headfirst into situations without adequately considering the experience and practical wisdom her father offers, leading to several dangerous predicaments from which she must be rescued. Her impatience with being treated like a child can lead her to make impulsive decisions, locking her father out of the controls of their mech or striking out on her own to prove a point. This is a key part of her early development, as she learns a difficult lesson: that raw intelligence is not a substitute for real-world experience and that her father's seemingly simple skills are invaluable for survival.

As the story progresses, Memenpu undergoes significant development, particularly concerning her identity and her relationship with Gagumber. A major turning point occurs when she is confronted by the terrorist group Shibito, who reveal that she is what is known as a Rainbow Child. These children are genetically engineered beings, created to possess extraordinary intellect and vivid memories from infancy, intended to serve as guardians of the Labyrinth. The revelation that the visions she thought were dreams are actually her own infant memories, and that the man she calls father may not be her biological parent, throws her into a profound existential crisis. In this moment of vulnerability, her intellectual confidence crumbles, revealing a scared and sensitive little girl. It is Gagumber's unconditional love and unwavering declaration that he is her father, regardless of blood or biology, that saves her. This experience cements their bond not as a mere convenience of circumstance but as a genuine, unbreakable family.

In terms of role within the narrative, Memenpu serves as the primary driver of the plot. Her dream and her determination to reach the surface are the catalysts that pull her reluctant father out of their mundane colonial life and into the wider, more dangerous world. She is often the one to set their course, analyze new threats, and find scientific solutions to the environmental puzzles of the Labyrinth. Her key relationship is, unequivocally, with her father, Gagumber. Their dynamic evolves from one of bickering and mutual misunderstanding into a deeply trusting and synergistic partnership where her brains and his brawn and experience complement each other perfectly.

Memenpu possesses a suite of notable abilities that make her a formidable, if small, adventurer. Her most prominent ability is her superhuman intelligence, which she applies to inventing and operating complex machinery. She is particularly skilled at piloting and modifying their multipurpose work mech, Tony. She also possesses an exceptional sense of direction and remarkable spatial awareness, making her an excellent navigator in the labyrinth's confusing and treacherous tunnels. In moments of crisis, she can quickly analyze a situation and formulate complex escape plans, demonstrating a natural leadership ability even when her ego gets the better of her.
